Editorial Reviews

Criticas
This political treatise by Italian Renaissance writer Machiavelli is a classic, popular with business people and politicians. Widely criticized but endorsed by many, this guide for a prince's political success suggests that politics should be kept separate from theological and moral considerations, a revolutionary premise in the 16th century. To preserve the state, Machiavelli argues, it is often necessary, to act, with a certain degree of cynicism, "against mercy, against faith, against humanity, against frankness, against religion," a view that certainly has parallels in today's political arena. The neutral narration by Pedro Montoya is often too fast paced for the complexity of the work, making it difficult to understand its ideas. Also, the use of the Castilian vosotros might mislead some listeners. The complex ideas are better grasped by reading than by listening, and so this audiotape is not recommended. Awesome Nook En Espanol
