Through the observations of six narrators—each with unique perspectives on the man, his motivations, and the roots of his triumphs and failures—this account chronicles a psychologically complex social history of the 80 years of his life.

Louis Auchincloss was an American lawyer, a novelist, a historian, and an essayist. He is the author of dozens of novels, including East Side Story, The Education of Oscar Fairfax, and Portrait in Brownston, and the biographies of Edith Wharton, Henry James, and Theodore Roosevelt. Ignacio Peyró is a journalist and a translator.
