Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature
Bridgestone's "Countries of the World" series offers attractively presented, brief introductions to each featured country, appropriate for elementary-school readers. Here readers begin with "fast facts" about El Salvador, including a helpful comparison to show its size: "a little smaller than the U.S. state of Massachusetts." Child-focused topics such as "Life at Home," "Going to School," "Salvadoran Food," "Animals," "Sports and Recreation," and "Holidays and Celebrations" each receive a one-page discussion, flanked by a striking full-color photo. Occasionally the writing is somewhat flat: "Other animals are common in El Salvador. Iguanas and boa constructors also are common. Hummingbirds are common in El Salvador." But the glimpses given into Salvadoran life are generally poignant and interesting: for instance, because "El Salvador does not have enough teachers or schools many children do not attend school at all." The accompanying photo shows a classroom very different from those in most American schools, with one scarred blackboard hung on a bare cinder-block wall. The book closes with directions for playing a Salvadoran game called "La Gallina Ciega," or "The Blind Hen," as well as a few, very simple words in Spanish for children to learn, a glossary of new terms in the text, a bibliography, useful addresses and Internet sites, and an index. 2002, Bridgestone Books,
