Children's Literature
Several chapters full of engaging color photographs detail the land of this smallest Central American country. This book is one in the three-part series of El Salvador that covers the land, peoples and cultures. The beginning of the book describes the country's natural landscape, explaining the topography, major volcanoes, rivers and coastal areas. It also covers the weather and natural hazards, such as hurricanes and earthquakes, which shape and define the land and its inhabitants. Two chapters cover the Salvadoran people and the Mayan historical remains in El Salvador. Other chapters cover the country's major cities, the economy and wildlife. A good description of how people travel around El Salvador is included along with photographs documenting these modes of transportation. Overall, this book is very well done and it will engage young readers who are researching or traveling to El Salvador. Words highlighted throughout the text are defined in a glossary and an index and table of contents will assist readers in quickly locating information. The book is part of "The Lands, Peoples and Cultures" series. 2002, Crabtree Publishing, $20.60 and $7.95. Ages 8 to 12. Reviewer: Melissa A. Caudill
