Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature - Kathleen Monks
Quick to become an instant favorite for future geologists and soil scientists will be the newest title in the "Las Rocas" series. This Spanish non-fiction chaptered book investigates the numerous aspects of soil on our planet. Readers will appreciate the detailed explanations provided by the author. Each chapter ranges from two to four pages, making it a fun and engaging read for most third to fifth graders. Topic coverage ranges from what soil is, how rocks form soil, what is in soil (plants, animals, minerals, and other nutrients), identifying different soils, using soils, to how to protect soils. Chapters discuss each subject in greater depth, with the aid of clear, informative images. The last chapter in the book includes a fun activity for kids, providing instructions on how to dye a shirt using color created by minerals within soil. Also worthy of note is the excellent organizational structure of the book, which is a great feature for new non-fiction readers or those simply searching for information. Among these additional sections are a table of contents, glossary (comprised of words bolded within the text), index, and a "Learn More" segment with references to additional books and websites. Written in both Spanish and English ("Soil, Let's Rock"), this book would make a great addition to public and school libraries or other educational settings. Reviewer: Kathleen Monks
