El narrador describe una historia de amor y muerte en la que muestra la soledad del individuo contemporáneo. No están ausentes de esta trama policial y de suspenso, la locura y la increíble reflexión del protagonista, el pintor Juan Pablo Castel, debatiéndose por comprender las causas que lo arrastraron a matar a la mujer que amaba , María Iribarne, y que era su única vía de salvación. En este alucinante drama de la vida interior, seres intrincados en la bestial búsqueda de comprensión ceden a la mentira, la hipocresía y los celos desmedidos hasta el crimen más inexplicable. Aventura amorosa, aventura onírica, aventura del ser que dan testimonio de un asesinato, de cierta memoria culpable y de una valiente introspección.

Técnicamente perfecta y de lectura apasionante, El túnel excede el negativismo ácido de Sartre, y la frenética huida hacia el vacío que plantea El extranjero de Camus, pero tiene de esos dos maestros literarios la impronta genial que hace de la escritura una radiografía del alma atormentada.

Ernesto Sábato nació en Rojas, provincia de Buenos Aires, en 1911; hizo su doctorado en Física y cursos de Filosofía en la Universidad de La Plata; trabajó en el laboratorio Curie, y abandonó definitivamente la ciencia en 1945 para dedicarse a la literatura. Ha escrito varios libros de ensayo sobre el hombre en la crisis de nuestro tiempo y sobre el sentido de la actividad literaria: Uno y el Universo (1945; versión definitiva Seix Barral, 1979); Hombres y engranajes (1951; versión definitiva Seix Barral, 1991); El escritor y sus fantasmas (1963; versión definitiva Seix Barral, 1979); Apologías y rechazos (Seix Barral, 1979). Sus tres novelas, cuyas versiones definitivas se honró en presentar Seix Barral al público de habla hispana en 1978, recorrieron el mundo: El túnel (1948); Sobre héroes y tumbas (1961); Abaddón el exterminador (1974; premiada en París como la mejor novela extranjera publicada en Francia en 1976). En 1983 fue elegido presidente de la Comisión Nacional de la Desaparición de Personas, creada por decisión del presidente de la República Argentina, Raúl Alfonsín. Fruto de la tarea de esta comisión fue el sobrecogedor volumen Nunca más (Seix Barral, 1985), conocido como Informe Sabato. En 1984 obtuvo el Premio Cervantes, y en 1989, el Premio Jerusalem. El volumen Entre la letra y la sangre (Seix Barral, 1989) es un reader cuya selección prólogo y comentarios estuvieron a cargo del autor. En 1998 publicó Antes del fin (memorias; Seix Barral).
