Dos personas tan distintas como Jordan Marsalis -ex teniente del departamento de policía de Nueva York y hermano del alcade- y Maureen Martini -comisario de la policía de Roma e hija de una gran abogado criminalista-, deben unir sus fuerzas para dar caza a un lúcido y despiadado asesino en serie.
La primera víctima es un artista vanguardista, hijo del alcalde de Nueva York y por tanto sobrino de Jordan. Este pronto descubre que la pista que ha dejado el asesino está relacionada con un personaje del cómic de Snoopy y Carlitos Brown, y se da cuenta que este es sólo el principio de una cadena de crímenes. El único indicio que tiene del escenario del crimen es que el asesino cojea de una pierna.
Mientras, en Roma, la comisario Maureen sufre una terrible paliza de manos de un delincuente que la deja ciega y decide someterse a una complicada operación en Nueva York, donde le hacen un injerto de córnea. La operación es un éxito, recupera la vista, pero de pronto tiene espantosas visiones de crímenes, que relaciona con la muerte del hijo del alcalde. Se da cuenta que este ha sido su donante y acude al alcalde entrando así en contacto con Jordan.
Poco después se suceden dos nuevos crímenes, pistas de los personajes de ficción, y por fin Jordan descubre que las víctimas tienen algo en común: eran compañeros de universidad en una época en que paralelamente se perpetró un atraco en el que los delincuentes cubrían sus caras con máscaras de los personajes de Snoopy, Carlitos, Linus, Lucy...
Con el trasfondo de Roma y Nueva York donde todo parece real a simple vista, pero nada es lo que parece, entre incomprensibles mensajes y visiones escalofriantes, los dos protagonistas se ven envueltos en la afanosa búsqueda del asesino, en una loca carrera llena de inesperadas emociones, miedos, obsesiones, que a veces se ve interrumpida por momentos de amor, amistad y complicidad.

Un thriller de ritmo vertiginoso, original, con un atractivo estilo narrativo y una trama inteligente que usa los mejores recursos del género. Un estupendo retrato psicológico de sus protagonistas, que son presentados con los matices de vicios y pasiones humanas, fortalezas y debilidades, que confirman los dotes de Faletti en escarbar en los pensamientos más secretos del ser humano y como el maestro del thriller italiano
