Overview

Author of the best-selling Royal Diaries title, CLEOPATRA VII, Kristiana Gregory now takes readers to twelfth-century France and introduces Eleanor of Aquitaine, who becomes queen at age 15.

Fourteen-year-old Eleanor of Aquitaine lives in a castle in Poitier, France, with her father Count William of Aquitaine (son of William the Conqueror), and her 12-year-old sister Petronilla. Their mother died several years earlier, so their grandmother and ladies-in-waiting raise the girls. Eleanor is extremely intelligent and literate, having been carefully educated by royal tutors. Spinning bores her, as does weaving, sewing, and other housewifery skills expected of her. She would rather be a knight and ride off to war. In fact, in 1136, when her father is invited to help invade Normandy,

The diary of Eleanor, first daughter of the duke of Aquitaine, from 1136 until 1137, when at age fifteen she becomes queen of France. Includes historical notes on her later life.

Editorial Reviews

From Barnes & Noble
At 13, Eleanor is known as a mischievous and daring scamp, the headstrong daughter of a French aristocrat. But when her father goes off to war, Eleanor must rely on herself and her sisters. And then, at 15, she must confront a fate that would cause even the most fearless teenager to tremble: marriage to a prince who is destined to become king!
VOYA
The years 1136 and 1137 were busy ones for Eleanor of Aquitaine, whose story begins just before she turns fourteen in this Royal Diaries series book. Her father dies, she marries, and she becomes queen of France. Gregory effectively captures the quick pace of these life-changing events. To add even more drama to Eleanor's story, Gregory creates a knight for her heroine to develop a crush on, threatens her with an attempted kidnapping, and fills her life with small daily tensions. The book's strength lies in its portrait of medieval life. Gregory provides enough detail about the uncomfortable physical conditions and unhygienic living arrangements of even the most privileged of twelfth-century inhabitants to undermine any idealistic notions that readers might harbor about life in a castle. Parasites of varied species make regular appearances. As with every medieval heroine of modern fiction, Eleanor detests the embroidery and needlework with which her elders expect her to fill her days. Finally, Eleanor's relationships with her younger sister, Petronitia, and her grandmother are also warmly affectionate and convincing. Ultimately, however, the fictionalized diary fails to create the sense of a unique person. Nevertheless, readers who are fond of the format will enjoy Eleanor's pleasant but undemanding persona. Those who prefer biography will wonder how this ordinary girl, who is generally obedient, devout, and loyal, ever became the powerful, independent, and politically active woman who was the real Eleanor of Aquitaine. School Library Journal
Gr 4-7-Eleanor's story begins in Poitiers, where she lives in a castle with her father, Duke William X of Aquitaine; her younger sister; and her grandmother. The 13-year-old's days are filled with lessons, court gossip and intrigue, and royal feasts. As a young lady approaching the marrying age, she and others are on the lookout for a suitable husband for her. Eleanor's diary is also the repository of some of the seamy details of life, including fleas in people's hair. When she marries the King of France's son, Louis the Younger, she goes to Paris to assume her new royal duties. With attention focused on the small details of life and her youthful dreams, Eleanor comes to life. At the same time, readers learn about this period and some of its inhabitants through her eyes. An epilogue, historical note, family tree, photographs, and glossary of characters round out the book. Fans of the series will devour this installment.-Kristen Oravec, Cuyahoga County Public Library, Strongsville, OH Copyright 2003 Cahners Business Information.

    A great diary!

I loved Eleanor of Aquitiane! I loved how she was so headstrong and independent. The book mainly talks of her life with her sister Petra'Petronilla'and the events following her father's poisoning. I thought it sad that her father just left his daughters in the hands of a man who only wanted to wash his hands clean of them. Poor Eleanor, forced to marry a wimpy husband, though he did behead somone. I love the picture of Eleanor on the cover, and love her dress, somthing I'd want to wear. I recommend this book for ages nine and over. A very, very good book.

    Awful! Horrible! and Generally dry.

This was an awful book. Eleanor is Boy crazy, foolhardy, and generally not worth reading. She has a huge crush on a boy, and then when she is supposed to get married, she has a crush on the prince, and when they get married, they have 2 kids and get divorced. this was horrible book with a horrible ending.

    Excellent Book!!!

Eleanor:Crown Jewl of Aquitaine is about a girl who has a unique character and personality. She's outgoing and fun and just has a life full of excitement. Eleanor's mother and brother dies when she was younger ,and then her father dies later on. Left with just a sister and Grandma,Eleanor turns out to be a strong woman in character. For anyone who loves to read Royal Diary books and Dear America books this one will definitely be one of your favorites!!

    Dull and Unorigianl

I found Eleanor to be a poor take-off from Isabel and Elisabeth. Eleanor had nothing original to it, it was as if it was a bad secule to either of the two books. I didn't find much plot or theme. It starts off with her father but switches to her future husband. The charcters come and go, but they aren't as brought out as the ones in say Cleopatra. This book did have some good qualities. There were some enjoyable parts, and I have to admit it isn't as poorly written as I have made it out to be. It is just dull. I wouldn't recomand to people who are just reading the series though.

    A captivating and enchanting story

I really liked this book. I mean really. It was amazing, and I felt like I was with Eleanor, watching everything that happened. I've always been interested in the middle ages, and this book showed me what they were like for women. It was beautifully written, and it had everything a book needed: Romance, adventure, and drama. I would highly recommend it!

    I LOVED ALL THE ROMANCE

I just loved this book. There is absolutely nothing wrong with it. What I liked most about it is that there is alot of romance envolved. That's what suppose to happen with Royal Princesses instead of them being unhappy all the time. Don't put this book down, it was worthy of reading. According to Kit Donata who wrote a review for Cleopatra she says that they won't be makeing anymore of these books after 2004. I find it very sad.

    Way to go Kathryn Lasky

More than once, I have recalled parts of the Royal Diaries in history classes and used information from the books to help on tests and answer questions, thus impressing my teachers. Keep up the good work Ms. Lasky.

Fact is more powerful than Fiction

The real story of Eleanor,Duchess of Acquitaine,Queen of France, wife of Henry 11 , King of England, mother of Richard 1, (the Lionheart) and King John of Magna Carta fame, who went on Crusade to the Holy Land, was far more exciting than the romantic ,almost fairytale-like account of the early years of this extraordinary medieval woman. If this novel leads at least some of the readers to venture into a real well-written biography of the 'most fascinating, talented, beautiful, influential and noteworthy' of the rulers of the 12th Century, it will have achieved its most useful purpose.

This was a good book and enjoyable.

This book was enjoyablea dn hard for me to put down. I have enjoyed these types of books. Eleanor was a brave girlin going to marry some one that she was afraid that she would never love. She was in love witht he knight adn she knew that her father would never allow that marriage to go through, then her fahter died and she knew that her father wanted her to marry that pricne. They met in a very unsal way, to say the least. but it was a ver enjoyable book, adn for people that like this serise I think that you should readit
