Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature
Following the format of other titles in the "Childhood of Famous Americans" series, this book dwells mostly on Eleanor's early years. The fictionalized biography opens with two-year-old Eleanor meeting her distant cousin, Franklin. On a trip to Europe three years later, Eleanor begs her father to buy shoes for a barefoot Italian "donkey" boy, demonstrating her concern for others. In a Paris convent where she speaks no French, Eleanor tells a bold lie, hoping to be noticed. She pretends to have swallowed a penny, as another student has done. "Swallowing the penny" becomes a metaphor for Eleanor's reluctant initiation into society. Eleanor is always aware of being unattractive. She compares herself first to her beautiful mother and later to her vivacious cousin, Alice. Two-thirds of the book leisurely deals with Eleanor's girlhood; the last third gallops through her marriage to Franklin, their public life and her growth as a social activist. Some scenes, such as the lengthy European voyage, seem padded. Somewhat dated (the word "Negro" appears), this book is a readable introduction to the First Lady of the World. 2001 (orig. 1965), Aladdin, $4.99. Ages 8 to 12. Reviewer: Candice Ransom
