Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature
There is plenty to learn about electricity and how it works. Author Richardson explains the basics of electricity and how electricity is made in this primary book for young readers. Twelve short chapters explain the different aspects of electricity: how flashlights work, how batteries make electricity, what electric currents are, and how electricity is measured. Fast facts about electricity are scattered throughout the book. One example is Thomas Edison's invention of the first long-lasting light bulb in 1879. Another fast fact discusses German scientist Carl Gassner's invention of the first "dry" cell battery. Good, clear illustrations and photographs help to explain the concepts outlined in this book. For example, the section on how batteries make electricity uses an illustration of a battery that shows how chemicals, water, and zinc powder mix together inside a battery to make electricity. Another example is a drawing of a power plant, which shows how burning coal heats water in a plant's boiler and then steam from the water turns the turbine connected to the electric generator. Back matter has more fast fact information, an easy experiment, a glossary, Internet sites, and further reading. Part of the "Fact Finders" series. 2006, Capstone Press, Ages 7 to 10.
