Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature - Vicki Foote
This nonfiction book in the "Fundamental Physics Series" provides comprehensive scientific information about how electricity has developed, how magnetism and electricity are related, and how both are used by people in today's world. An introduction discusses what the reader will learn and explains the feature boxes, which are printed in blue and interspersed throughout the text. The "Did You Know?" boxes contain interesting facts, "Test Yourself" has questions about what was read, "Investigate" has experiments that can be done at home, and "Time Travel" tells of discoveries from the past and developments which may affect science in the future. Words that are highlighted in bold print throughout the text are found in the glossary. Beginning with an explanation of electricity, the text continues with chapters about batteries, magnets, electromagnetism, energy, and the environment. Interesting color photographs, charts, graphs, and illustrations on each page clarify and enhance the information. A timeline of electric technology through the years and an explanation of how television works are two examples of related text that add to the scope of pertinent information. An index and answers to the "Test Yourself" and "Investigate" features are included. This text provides excellent scientific material for educational purposes.
