Overview

Building on the author's personal experience in working with fellows and residents in the electromyography laboratory, this volume is a definitive reference in the field, addressing the specific needs of neurologists interested in noninvasive electrodiagnostic methods, particularly those practicing electromyography (EMG). The book provides a comprehensive review of most peripheral nerve and muscle diseases, including specific techniques and locations for performing each test. Divided into two major sections, the first addresses the basics of electrodiagnosis, including information on anatomy and physiology, techniques for nerve conduction studies, discussions of the blink reflex and H-reflex, etc. The second section presents each neuromuscular disorder, covering clinical aspects and extensive information on the distinctive electrophysiological findings typical of the disease.

"...classic text puts the art & science of clinical electrodiagnosis at your fingertips...includes relevant anatomy & physiology, basic instrumentation, nerve conduct- tion studies, & electromyography."

Editorial Reviews

Neurophysiology
This marvelously well written book is very easy to read. It contains more than 1200 additional up-to-date references, excellent diagrams, illustrations, and many useful tables. This book obviously is the definitive text in the field of electromyography and should remain for some time to come.
—(Electroencephalography and Clinical Neurophysiology)
Neurology
Dr. Kimura's book is the most comprehensive in electrodiagnosis. I have routinely encouraged all of our fellows to read it from cover to cover. I have frequently used it as a reference and recommend it to all electromyographers and clinicians interested in neurophysiology and neuromuscular disorders.
Booknews
This volume is based on Kimura's (neurology, U. of Kyoto; U. of Iowa) research and experience with the applications of clinical electrophysiologic techniques. The discipline of electrodiagnosis is tracked from its historical roots to the latest techniques, with an explanatory background of the clinical, physiologic, anatomic, and pathologic foundations of the methods. This revised edition includes six completely rewritten chapters, two rewritten appendices, and 1,200 additional references selected from some 2,500 recent publications. Most other sections underwent substantial updating and clarification. For students and diagnosticians. Annotation c. Book News, Inc., Portland, OR (booknews.com)
From the Publisher

"The new edition...will be welcomed not only by trainees in electrodiagnostic medicine but by established physicians who seek a comprehensive and up-to-date account of the specialty by one of its masters. Jun Kimura- a former editor-in-chief of the journal Muscle and Nerve and a past president of the International Federation of Clinical Neurophysiology-has made seminal personal contributions to the field and is recognized widely as an authority on electromyography and electrodiagnosis. His experience over many years as a physician, investigator, and teacher has been distilled to produce this outstanding, comprehensive new edition. The volume...will serve as a terrific informational resource as well as facilitating daily practice for both new and established specialists. It is a mine of information."
-- Michael J. Aminoff, MD, DSc, FRCP, Distinguished Professor and Executive Vice Chair, Department of Neurology, University of California, San Francisco, CA

"This Fourth Edition...lives up to all expectations - updating a classic reference that has been the "go-to" resource for a generation of electromyographers and neuromuscular clinicians the past thirty years. Major sections have been revised, new material included, outdated references removed, and the text streamlined to emphasis current concepts and practice. The clearly written and well-illustrated descriptions of the electrodiagnostic evaluation and expected results in health and disease are both practical and comprehensive, making the book appropriate for trainees and veteran electromyographers alike. This resource is a worthy companion of every physician who evaluates patients with suspected neuromuscular disorders. It is a resource to be read and consulted on a regular basis, not one that will collect dust on the owner's bookshelf."
-- James W. Albers, MD, PhD, Emeritus Professor of Neurology, University of Michigan Health System, Ann Arbor, MI

"This edition of Kimura is the most complete, authoritative, up to date, and readable text on electrodiagnosis available today. It is a multi-layered resource that will serve not only as a primer for the EMG beginner, but also as a reference text for the experienced electrodiagnostic consultant."
-- Kerry Levin MD, Chairman, Department of Neurology, Director, Neuromuscular Center, Cleveland Clinic, Cleveland, OH

"Great News - Jun Kimura's Electrodiagnosis in Diseases of Nerve and Muscle - Principles and Practice, Fourth Edition is out. Even though several decades have passed since this book was first conceived, it remains the Gold-Standard in the discipline and no text on the subject has out-performed this bible...A new and welcome feature of the 4th Edition is the creation of a CD. This adds important practical value to the book, allowing readers to watch and listen to various types of normal and abnormal EMG activities. This is a valuable tool for those preparing for Certification in EMG...Kimura's text remains an essential for all those practicing electromyography...[and] without it their medical education is lacking and limited."
-- Andrew Eisen MD., FRCPC, Professor Emeritus Neurology, University of British Columbia, Vancouver, Canada

"The new addition of Electrodiagnosis in Diseases of Nerve and Muscle - Principles and Practice. The pleasant surprise as I reviewed this fourth edition was the substantial amount of change in organization of sections and chapters, in addition to updates of the material. Age-related information, both pediatric/development and geriatric/aging are now co-located. Similarly late responses now follow the nerve conduction chapters, rather than being lumped into Special Techniques with pediatrics. Throughout this manuscript, Jun Kimura has updated his elegantly written textbook, and it is still is still the most readable in the field. Whether your interest is the secrets of volume conduction or the basics of median nerve testing, this book belongs on your desk."
-- William S. Pease, MD, Ernest W. Johnson Professor, Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation, The Ohio State University Wexner Medical Center, Dodd Hall Rehabilitation Hospital, Columbus, OH

"This is a very useful book, not only for those training in neurophysiology or studying for an exam, but also as a reference in the lab when performing tests and reviewing results. I like the fact that it starts with the basics and then builds upon them. I am a great fan of the previous editions, but I think this update has excellent added features and sections making it a valuable tool." --Kathleen D. Kennelly, MD, PhD, Doody's Review Service

Doody's Review Service
Reviewer: Kathleen D. Kennelly, MD, PhD (Mayo Clinic Florida)
Description: This is the fourth edition of a comprehensive review of the techniques used in electrodiagnosis and their usefulness in diagnosing diseases of the peripheral nervous system. Special features include the normative data and description of abnormalities in certain diseases in the appendixes, definitions of terms used in electrodiagnosis, and a DVD that contains waveforms. The third edition was published in 2001.
Purpose: The purpose is to provide an update of current practice and assist readers in electrophysiological problem-solving. The new data include more information on the pediatric and geriatric populations and techniques such as intraoperative monitoring. Although there are other books on electrophysiology, this one meets its objectives in a concise and well-organized fashion, making it an excellent reference.
Audience: The author intends this book for clinicians who perform electrodiagnostic procedures. It can be used as a quick guide for beginning electromyographers (for anatomical location or reviewing a technique), but it also provides in-depth discussions and references for advanced practitioners. Dr. Kimura is a renowned authority on electromyography and electrodiagnosis who has made many contributions to the field and is an excellent teacher and clinician.
Features: The book is very well organized. It starts with the basic principles of electrodiagnosis including physiology and anatomy as well as equipment set up, techniques, and practical applications. It discusses the intricacies of both nerve conduction studies and electromyography. There are also chapters on other procedures such as somatosensory and motor evoked potentials and intraoperative monitoring. It describes not only the techniques, but also what might be found in normal individuals as well as results for different disease entities. The appendixes are very easy to refer to and the DVD adds extra value. The main shortcoming is the quality of some of the printed waveforms, which are not clear in some cases.
Assessment: This is a very useful book, not only for those training in neurophysiology or studying for an exam, but also as a reference in the lab when performing tests and reviewing results. I like the fact that it starts with the basics and then builds upon them. I am a great fan of the previous editions, but I think this update has excellent added features and sections making it a valuable tool.
