    Do-It-Yourselfer's Home Security Systems

This book begins wonderfully with a comprehensive review of the most popular sensor technologies and control panel options, including the strengths and weaknesses of each in actual use. However, the book degenerates all too quickly into a detailed description of how to design and build your own sensor and control panel circuits. It ends by concluding that digital control systems, central monitoring services, and IR beams are inappropriate and wasteful in the home environment -- not exactly in keeping with current trends. In the process, many significant questions go unanswered about how one would design, purchase and install a home system based on the many commercially-available control panels and sensors. Ultimately, I think this book is really only useful to someone who wants to custom-build their own home security system from scratch -- not exactly the largest segment of the market.
