Overview

When the young singer Margareth Menezes -- who had rarely left her hometown of Salvador -- was told in 1988 that David Byrne wanted her to join his new band, she thought her manager was kidding. Though frightened, she signed up and ended up blowing away audiences around the world. Byrne was impressed enough to produce two tracks on this, her thoroughly enjoyable debut. ELEGIBO, in fact, was among the first albums to modernize and popularize the percussion-based polyrhythms of Salvador -- the powerful sound is a delicious counterpoint to Menezes' deep, rich voice. Several cuts move to a loping reggae beat; there is even one fast, sexy lambada, "Abra A Boca E Fecha Os Olhos" (Open Your Mouth and Close Your Eyes). Soft Caribbean rhythms percolate on songs such as "Alegria Da Cidade," but highlights include her takes on traditional northeastern music, such as the hypnotic "Hino Das Aguas" and the modern-folkloric mix "If´ Um Canto Pra Subir." The stratospheric promise of her debut was realized in newer (and, some point out, lighter-skinned) singers, who took the same formula and ran with it, minting one of the most exciting styles of modern Brazil pop.

Editorial Reviews

All Music Guide
This fine singer is in a heavily U.S.-influenced avant-Afro vein. Conscious hip eclecticism is duller than less pretentious and more local styles, still, Menezes does it better than many and a couple of the cuts really come together (unlike one notably silly reggoid, sub-soul number sung in bad English), and her band has plenty of rather un-Brazilian big-band-salsa kick. ~ John Storm Roberts, Original Music
