Editorial Reviews

School Library Journal
YA-This book applies generous illustrations and an open, attractive format to a broad spectrum of ideas. Diverse topics include astrology, paranormal phenomena, fortune-telling techniques, health and fitness, and one- or two-paragraph descriptions of some common religions or "belief systems." While Crosse's introduction claims this volume "in no way tries to make any decisions for you," some of the unconventional ideas such as numerology and the "Universal Laws, which keep the World in balance" are presented in a matter-of-fact manner without the qualifying statements prefacing others. This survey is very well organized. Titles of all the subtopics given one- or two-page coverage are listed in the table of contents under the four main topics: "The Mind," "The Body," "The Spirit," and "The Earth." Section headings, introductory paragraphs, fact boxes, and see-also notes appear on nearly every double-page spread. Index entries refer to text and captions. The bibliography includes an extensive list of recent titles; nearly half of them are DK or Element publications. For in-depth treatment, individual books on the subject must be consulted. Sharp, full-color photographs, and many dramatic illustrations combine with color-coordinated design features and artistic juxtaposition of text to form a tempting smorgasbord.-Ann G. Brouse, Big Flats Branch Library, NY
