With a vocabulary extended to include all words used by Catullus, Tibullus, Propertius, and Tacitus, as well as those used by Terence, Caesar, Sallust, Cicero, Livy, Nepos, Virgil, Horace, Ovid, Juvenal, Phaedrus, and Curtius, this abridgement of Lewis's Latin Dictionary for Schools excludes proper names and detailed references to books and passages, and limits illustrative citations.

Editorial Reviews

From the Publisher
"The only authoritative dictionary of Classical Latin available in abridged form; the only Latin dictionary suitable for undergraduates at all levels; and the only one that will not lead students astray with false translations because it gives precise contexts."—John A. A decent dictionary with a good vocabulary, but some words I needed to look up were not there. Also, there is information in the beginning about Roman currency, weights and measure, Latin pronunciation, etc., but there are no declension or conjugation tables, so you must already know Latin grammar. An unusual experience I had with my copy - I bought it used and every time I flipped through to look up a word, feathers fell out from between the pages!

    I Also Recommend:

Only buy this book if you are serious about the language!

It is not a very cheap dictionary, and here, you get what you pay for. But if you are not looking to drop some money, this is not the book for a casual glance to read, for example, a line in a play. It is also not for beginning studies in the language, because there is no extensive grammar help, and a very brief intro into declining and conjugating (not for learning grammar, this one).
This book is an awesome buy for me as a college student earning my degree with a focus on Latin language and literature. I am an upper-level student and in the advanced Latin classes. I was sick of short and slight translations of the Latin into English and needed something with a little more research and well-rounded, multiple variations of translation of a word (little paper backs didnt have my word in it and the gloss of a latin reader only gave one word translations for all a word's uses...). this is a great buy online (esp with a B&N discount!), because it is inexpensive, and the perfect amount of text and depth for a student. If one is extrememly learned, it is more of a handy 'pocket-sized' dictionary and not the best or most thourough dictionary out there. Because there is no English to Latin section, the entire dictionary is better used for translation of ancient texts, and there is therefore more room for words and details, such as what time period a certain word is most frequently found in.
In short, I recommend this dictionary for all students of Latin, in or out of college, who want a more detailed dictionary, but who can't afford the outrageously expensive top-notch dictionaries. It is a great dictionary for a reasonable price.

Enormous publishing mistake with this one. Beware!

This dictionary has a deservedly good reputation. Unfortunately, the copy that I just returned was missing the first half of the entries, with the second half of the dictionary having been duplicated in its place. So unless you really don't need anything in Latin before the letter "l," you'll want to pass on this one until Oxford recalls the defective copies.
