Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature - Lisa Colozza Cocca
The life cycle of an elephant is explained in this title, part of the "Animal Life Cycle" series. This twenty-four page book is divided into four short chapters, plus back matter. Each spread features very brief text and detailed, and sometimes labeled, full-color photographs. The book begins by showing the life cycle of an elephant in three photographs. It then proceeds through the three stages of the cycle: calf, adolescent, and adult. The text describes the gestation period as well as the habits of the young calves. It distinguishes between the lives of the males and the females of the species as the elephants age. A simple timeline of the stages of the cycle runs across the bottom of the pages and highlights the main points in the text. Back matter includes an illustrated glossary and a sequencing activity for readers. There is also a teacher and parent guide page, a short list of web sites for further information, and a simple index. Presented simply and in a large font and spacing, the information covers both the basics and some interesting support facts. The book will most likely appeal to young report writers and animal lovers and is a worthwhile addition to a collection of animal books. This title supports the Common Core State Standards in reading informational texts. Reviewer: Lisa Colozza Cocca
