Overview

The crew of a Marine huey (UH-1E) helicopter are shot down while providing close air support for a remote firebase deep in the Vietnamese bush. Isolated and unable to be heli-lifted out due to inclement weather they are forced to make their way to a clearing deep in Elephant Valley where rescue choppers can land.

They are located by a Marine Force Reconnaisance patrol, however, due to mission requirements the grunts are unable to escort the aircrew. They also believe that to take them along on the mission would only make their job more difficult. They assign their Kit Carson Scout (a North Vietnamese Army Officer who defected) to lead them to the landing zone.

In the ensuing days the aircrewmen are forced to deal with their own personal fears and demons--a process that is made more difficult when they learn that their guide is being pursued by a North Vietnamese Army company led by a maniacal major with a personal grudge.
