Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature - Suzanne Javid
Yes, elephants do make a very loud trumpeting sound, but it's not the only sound they make. They can also bark, growl and snort! This book is sprinkled with fun facts and layered with information about elephants, the biggest animal around. The author spends little time on the sounds elephants make, opting instead to use each of twelve two-page spreads to highlight the activities of elephants. The information layering is found in fact-packed text boxes throughout the book providing a higher reading level or guided reading opportunity with parents, teachers or more fluent readers. Age appropriate text with large, clear print tells the elephant's story in a lively and informative poem especially appealing to emerging readers. Beginning readers can learn basic information about elephants. The two-page bold and colorful photos appeal to readers of all ages. Part of the "Sand Castle" series, this book is considered a level three Transitional Reader. Created to assist young readers in developing reading skills and strategies while increasing content knowledge, the series has four levels for use in shared, guided and independent reading and writing. It is a good read or shared read for a variety of skill levels. A glossary at the end of the book includes the page number on which the word first appears. A table of contents is included as is a section noting the word elephant in six different languages, including English. What's missing is a pronunciation key for five of the languages. Other titles in the series focus on dolphins, frogs, mice, parrots and snakes. The author has published nearly 100 children's books, ranging in reading levels from first to sixth grade, with most in a series format. Reviewer: Suzanne Javid
