Barnes & Noble - Brett Johnson
With their third disc, the alterna-rap offering Elephunk, Los Angeles hip-hop trio Black Eyed Peas once again bridge the gap between rap and pop. But this time the rhyming trio of Will.I.Am., Taboo, and apl.d.ap have added another pea to the pod -- female singer Fergie, who lends soulful wails to the Peas' live music and infectious hooks. As on past efforts, the group cleverly incorporates a variety of eclectic sounds, such as old-school rap samples, Latin grooves, and dancehall riddims.
In 2000, the Peas garnered crossover success with "Request Line," their collaboration with Macy Gray, and here they up the ante by recruiting a breathless Justin Timberlake for the first single, "Where Is the Love," which touches on topical issues including the war on terrorism and discrimination. Other guest shots include reggae vet Tippa Irie on the Sean Paul–reminiscent "Hey Mama" and Papa Roach on the rap-rock anthem "Anxiety," where crunching guitars overtake the Peas' elementary flows. Only on "Sexy," which supports a romantic rap with guitar and piano lines from bossa nova legend Sergio Mendes, does the collaboration fully gel. When left to their own devices -- as on such party-starting, sing-along tracks as "Hands Up" and "Fly Away" -- Black Eyed Peas show their true colors and really reach the dazzling creative heights they're capable of.
All Music Guide - John Bush
Although nominally a rap group, Black Eyed Peas call upon so many forms of songwriting and production that slotting them into hip-hop is like slotting Prince into R&B -- technically true, but very limiting. Elephunk, the group's third LP and the first to feature Fergie, doesn't have top-notch rapping, but as driven by frontman Will.I.Am, it does possess some of the most boundary-pushing productions in contemporary, mostly uncommercial hip-hop, right up at the level occupied by Common and OutKast. The smart, brassy opening club thump "Hands Up" hits another level with a sly bridge flaunting some heavy metallic slide guitar, while the highly pressurized love jam "Shut Up" features great interplay between Taboo and new member Fergie. Space doesn't allow for description of each track, but suffice to say any Will.I.Am track is going to feature loads of ideas and fresh sounds, not to mention plenty of stylistic change-ups -- from the digital-step ragga of "Hey Mama" featuring Tippa Irie to the Latinized, loved-up "Latin Girls." Like a latter-day Digital Underground, Black Eyed Peas know how to get a party track moving, and add a crazy stupid rhyme or two "bop your head like epilepsy" from the suitably titled "Let's Get Retarded".

    HEY MAMA!!!!

This CD rocks!!!!! Tracks 3,4,5 are the best! Where is the love is my favorite though. What's so cool though, is that the songs are different then how they put them on the radio. It's like a whole new version!!!!

    BEP....FINALLY ROCKIN

Black Eyed Peas (or BEP) finally enters the public eye of music with their 3rd album (their other 2 CDs did not receive much play on mainstream radio stations....they received most of their fame from college stations). Their first, chart-topping hit "Where is the Love" is an incredible song, where the group shows their true colors and leaves you with an incredible message, something most popular songs these days do not give. Some other rockin hits such as "Shut Up," "Hey Mama," and "Let's Get Retarded," are awesome, upbeat jams that are sure to get a club movin and everyone on their feet. With a CD that gives it all, the Black Eyed Peas show that they are bright stars in a muddled pop/hip-hop/rap music industry. Their different style and rythem have caught the eye of many. One of the best CDs I've bought in a while, and I advise that you should also run out and purchas it.

    third's a charm

Black Eyed Peas, or BEP for short, deliver yet another solid album. This is their third album and it a great album with lots of energy. They are a truly unique hip-hop group that incorporates hip-hop, funk, raggae, rap, and pop. With tracks like ‘Let’s Get Retarded’ and ‘Shut Up’, fans will be able to really get into the album. Their highly successful project Bridging the Gap, made fans worry that this album would be a let down. But many fans came to realize that this album would not disappoint them. BEP added a new member to the mix – Fergie. She brings a unique sound to table that really complements the group. Her presence has allowed the group to explore different sounds and gives them a brand new image. Elephunk may not be the same sound that fans are use to, but they will not be let down. BEP obviously spent a lot of time on this album and it is evident in the way the album draws you in.

Dont get it!! Only one good song!

There is basically only one really good song which is Where is The Love, which is great, but the rest of the songs are regular rap, nothing special, just like every other rap artist today.
