Overview

Hailey Dean is a young and tremendously successful criminal prosecutor in Georgia, equally proud of her career and her adoring fiance. But just a few weeks before the wedding, her fiance's murder and its aftermath send her into a tailspin. Grief-stricken and disillusioned with her profession, Hailey decides to leave Georgia for New York City; she hopes the change of pace and surroundings will help her heal. Transplanted to a lively, vibrant city where she has no ties and no painful reminders, Hailey embarks on a new career as a therapist. But just when she's beginning to feel settled in her new life, another tidal wave of turmoil engulfs her: Someone is murdering her patients, one by one. And the killer operates in the same way as the victims of the last case Hailey prosecuted. Clearly, Hailey hasn't left her past behind quite as well as she thought - and unless she returns to her true calling and solves the case, still more innocent people will die. Inspired by lawyer and television personality Nancy Grace's own beginnings as a prosecutor and the tragic death of her fiance, The Eleventh Victim is a compelling mystery full of intrigue that thrills from start to finish.

Editorial Reviews

Publishers Weekly
TV personality and bestseller Grace (Objection! with Diane Clehane) makes her fiction debut with a less than compelling thriller starring a heroine much like herself, Hailey Dean, a highly successful Atlanta assistant DA who loses her fiancé to violence. After a final courtroom triumph, the conviction of chef Clint Burrell Cruise for the murder of 11 prostitutes, Dean resigns her prosecutor post and moves to Manhattan, where within two years she has a new career as a therapist. When someone starts to murder her patients with an m.o. similar to Cruise’s, Dean becomes a suspect. Rather implausibly, neither the NYPD nor Dean is aware that Cruise has been released from prison after the reversal of his conviction on appeal. Little inconsistencies, like calling Cruise “the most prolific serial killer ever to stalk the city of Atlanta,” even though many would award that dubious honor to real-life child-killer Wayne Williams (referred to in the text), don’t help. (Aug.)
From The Critics
TV personality Grace's (coauthor, Objection!) fiction debut starts out as a compelling story about an Atlanta-based assistant DA who wins her case against a serial killer. But as it tracks her relocation to New York, her second career as a therapist, and the murder of her young female patients by a copycat killer, subplots that seem at odds with the main story, any growth of suspense is hindered. An improbable ending further disappoints. However, Kate McIntyre's (A Life That Matters) exemplary narration—she makes each character distinct and unique—helps to mitigate the flip-flopping story lines. Recommended for followers of Grace and fans of James Patterson. great book

There are a few different story lines occurring at once, sort of like a soap opera, but the change from one story line to another keeps the reader wanting to read more. Very entertaining!

An exhilarating chilling serial killer thriller.

Atlanta ADA Hailey Dean lost her fiancé when he was killed in a violent assault. That harrowing incident sent her to law school and the Office of the DA. However needing to leave the city, she prosecutes her last case successfully; convicting Clint Burrell Cruise for the serial killings of eleven prostitutes. Almost immediately after winning the case, Hailey resigns and moves to Manhattan.

Two years later, Hailey has left the law and become a therapist as she had planned before her beloved was murdered. However, she is shocked when someone begins murdering her patients using the same method that Cruise used. NYPD suspects Dean has lost it and is the person of interest as they find something of hers at a murder scene.

Although the plausibility factor is over the top of the empire State building and the key cast stereotyped from serial killer 101, fans will enjoy this fast-paced thriller that effortlessly switches point of view from distraught frightened avenging Hailey to the calm simmering angry killer. Readers will enjoy THE ELEVENTH VICTIM as Court TV reporter Nancy Grace uses her real life as part of the core of this exhilarating chilling serial killer thriller.

    Fiction but very realistic

I had my doubts when I purchased this book, but I must admit, I was totally surprised. Although this book is fiction, it was very realistic. Once I started this book, I couldn't put it down. I hope that Nancy continues to write fiction, because this was a home run for her. I LOVED THIS BOOK

    Dull

I couldn't get into this book and I am a big Nancy Grace fan. It was boring, dull and seemed like it started out as an autobiography. I had no sympathy for the main character, I made it to chapter 9 and then had to return it to the library. Had high hopes for this one.

How does Nancy do it all?

Thank goodness Nancy was encouraged to finish this book. What a long journey to write it and heal from the tragedy that sparked it. As a life long Atlantan, I enjoyed the familiar references in the book and was pleasantly surprised by her skillful storytelling. I am a mystery/crime junkie who enjoys her show and loves her dogged determination to be a voice for innocent victims. With the story left open for a sequel, I look forward to her next book. Nancy held her own with many of the popular mystery writers of today.

I Couldn't put this book down.

I thought this book was great, it was hard to put down. I was able to finish it in only 5 days. It keeps you in suspense. I thought the side stories were great, but when I really started to get into the stories more about Hailey I wish it was just about her. I really look forward to another story from Nancy Grace!

    Prepare for the long haul!!!

With my busy work schedule it took me 5 days to finish this book. It was a long 5 days. This is definitely not an "I can't seem to put it down" book. It was around chapter 32 that I starting getting in to this book. But, if you can hold out for the long haul, the ending is definietly worth finishing the book! Very good and shocking ending! The rest of the book was just very slow and kinda hard to get into for the first few chapters.

    Eleventh Victim

I tried to get into this book and gave up at chapter 10. It is confusing and boring. There is a lot of unnecessary foul language. I am surprised Nancy would use such words when they are not included in quotes. Wish I could get a refund.

Too many stories in one book

I was happy to read this and thought that NG had a great story going. But...I just didn't care for the side-story. I think this book had 2 stories in it and the sub-plot was too distracting. I loved the main story and the character Hailey Dean, but every time they went to the other story, I got frustrated. I understand having so much to say that you want to get it all in, but it was too much. I did love the main story and hope to see sequels, I just hope that the sequels feature Hailey Dean alone. It's not like the other story was boring, it just needed its own space. I think Nancy Grace is a great writer, but her editors should have cut the distracting Island story and most of the politician story. Hailey Dean is a great character and well-written, so I hope to see more of her in the future.

About what you'd expect from Nancy Grace

The formal reviews of this book hit the nail on the head. A lot of pages spent trying to convince the reader how great Nancy is via the thinly disguised fictional character of Hailey, but not alot of substance in terms of character development, plot or much of anything else. The writing style is also not what you would expect from someone who is or was an attorney (as compared to someone like Grisham who sets the standard in this field). The dialogue is almost wooden and the transitions are jerking and harsh. I've said it before, but it applies here as well since the plot involves yet another serial killer -- will someone please rewrite the formula for thrillers? Serial killers are rare in society, yet every thriller seems to command one. Also adding to the transparency of the plot is the notion that only Assistant DA Hailey, instead of a legion of medical examiners, noticed something as obvious as a piece of twine on each victim's body. That aspect alone, which appeared in the first chapter of the book, almost annoyed me enough to stop reading then and there.

    Better than expected

I really liked this book. At first I wasn't sure I was going to like it, but by the time I got to the middle of the book I was hooked and drawn in. I also liked the short chapters so I can read short bits at a time when I'm in situations that don't allow me to read for long periods of time.
Nancy develops the characters well and left me with a sense of suspense by the time I got to the end of the book. I recommend this one.

    Good book.

At first, it kept going back and forth but after that it was great. Vey intense and hard to put down. Would have loved to keep reading and wished it didn't end. Did she end up with the dentist? Did she move with the dentist?

    Predictable and annoying to read

This book was picked for my monthly book club - all 10 members agreed that it was horrible. The author goes on too many tangents to deliver background information making it hard to read and its' predictably makes it easy to put down; this killer combo leaves the reader as the 12th victim.

    A waste of time

I knew nothing about Nancy Grace when I started reading this book, so I couldn't figure out how it got published. Then I learned that she was a TV personality, so that explained it. The characters are trite and cartoonish, with the exception of the protagonist, who is a thinly disguised, saint-like version of Nancy Grace herself. The plot is impossible to believe and has so many holes I kept re-reading back pages to see if I had missed something. This book is sophomorish, and I would recommend it only to budding novelists to show them what a FIRST draft would look like.

    Great Book!

I am an avid reader. I especially enjoy crime/mystery. This book was so good. I really liked the twist at the end. I hope Nancy will continue to write more of the same. She is right up there with the BEST in my book (no pun intended)!

    The Eleventh Victim

I really enjoyed this book. I think this would be a perfect beginning to several more tales of Hailey's investigations. She was a very believable character and the suspense kept you reading right to the end.
