In West Hollywood, the licensed Chinese herbalists at Elixir's Tonics & Teas have been serving up therapeutic concoctions since 1997. Can't get to L.A. right now? Not to worry: Here are Elixir's special recipes for Focus Puller (to keep your mind sharp), Taming the Dragon (to counteract holiday indulgence), and Study Hall Fizz (to boost concentration), plus Positive Outlook Tonic, Get an Edge Tonic Soup, and more.
Many of the herbs (the ginsengs, goldenseal, ginger, echinacea) are commonly available; others are easy to find at health food stores. They all sound delicious, and even if you don't actually need a tonic, you'll want to blend one up anyway. Next time, your best friend feels the flu coming on, you can advise, "Take a dropper of astralgus and call me in the morning," or you can run over with a freshly whipped potion of Season's Greetings or Yin from the Cold.
