Children's LiteratureThis is a lively and fascinating account of the young Elizabeth I, her ancestors and family, palace intrigues, wars and foreign affairs, and the personal, romantic life of the most famous Queen Elizabeth. Greenblatt has succeeded marvelously in meshing all the elements into a good read laced with fine photographs. Everyday life in Elizabethan England is covered broadly and includes chapters about Clothing, Cosmetics and Hairstyles;Getting an Education;Earning a Living;Sports and Entertainment;and more. The author's expressed interest in "people who came before me" is evident throughout as she includes intimate and humorous details along with the requisite facts and figures, such as, "At the time of her death, Elizabeth owned some two thousand gowns and several hundred necklaces. She is said to have worn a new gown every day." A great way to experience this storied period in the history of the world. Part of the "Rulers and Their Times" series. 2002, Benchmark, $28.50. Ages 10 up. Reviewer:Judy Chernak
School Library JournalGr 6-9-Each of these lively series additions is divided into three distinct sections. The first presents biographical information on the ruler while the second offers information about the everyday lives of the people living under their rule. Government, housing, education, clothing, food, and festivals are among the topics covered. Final chapters offer a selection of excerpts from original documents of the period including letters, diary entries, poems, and manuscripts. The quality illustrations in both volumes include a map and color reproductions of paintings. Although captioned, few of the pictures are attributed. These well-researched books will make excellent choices for accessible surveys of the rulers, their reigns, and their times, and will be useful in most collections.-Sheilah Kosco, Rapides Parish Library, Alexandria, LA Copyright 2001 Cahners Business Information.
