Receiving a diagnosis of diabetes is traumatic for most adults; much more so for a child. New Hampshire-based councilwoman Shaheen tells of the impact that such a diagnosis for her eight-year-old daughter Elle had on their family. Determined to learn all she can about diabetes, the author focuses on discovering ways to find relief from the seemingly endless fear and anxiety that accompanies a chronic illness. Her resolve has borne fruit in that she is the cofounder and CEO of Good Measures, a company that develops online tools and services to help people manage their health. During the family struggle to cope, they uncovered a new and growing recognition of the role dogs play in the detection and monitoring of human health conditions. Enter a medic-alert Labrador retriever named Coach. The bond between Elle and Coach is amazing, and the relief and comfort it provides to both Elle and her family is nothing short of miraculous, giving testament to the benefit and power of the human-animal bond. VERDICT Strongly recommended for its insight into coping with the consequences of diabetes and inspiration to turn a negative for one into a positive for many.—Edell Marie Schaefer, Brookfield P.L., WI

My pre-ordered copy of Elle & Coach arrived on the 25th. Late that afternoon I decided to take a quick scan through the pages. Instead of spending a few minutes, I ended up reading the entire book! Elle's story is well written and very engaging. I felt the stress, exhaustion, fear, determination, love, hope and acceptance Elle, and the family, experienced in dealing with the disease of type 1 diabetes. As I was reading, multiple times I found myself saying to my spouse "You've just got to hear this one little part" and then sharing excerpt after excerpt about Elle's dramatic changes in blood sugar levels, her tenacity with theatre performances and the miracle of Coach becoming part of her life. I appreciate a book that educates and informs me as well as expands my heart. This book definitely qualifies. It's a wonderful story of hope and possibility. I highly recommend this book.

Elle & Coach is an eye-opening book about a family whose oldest daughter has Type 1 diabetes. Stefany Shaheen takes you along the family's journey, filled with highs and lows (no pun intended) and illustrates how their medic-alert dog, Coach, dramatically improves their lives. The book is filled with honesty, bravery, and heart. I could not put it down and I cannot recommend it highly enough.

As someone who has a brother with diabetes I found this book absolutely amazing. I’ll admit that at first I was a little disappointed that Coach wasn’t in the story from page one but then I realized how important it was to understand Elle’s life both before and after Coach. There are several instances in the book where they talk about before diabetes (BD) and after diabetes (AD) but I think the important thing to understand is before Coach (BC) and after Coach (AC). Dogs are truly amazing in what they can do. I didn't want to put the book down yet I didn't want to end either. I wish Elle and Coach a long and happy life together. I highly recommend this book to everyone.

A touching and compelling book about a family's struggle with type 1 diabetes and their medic alert dog that made life with a chronic illness more manageable. This book was an easy read and touched all of my emotions. Well written and very inspirational. I highly recommend it.

If you or someone you love is struggling with Type 1 diabetes or other life-threatening chronic disability, and especially if you love dogs - this is a must-read. This is a very well written, concise, but accurate portrayal of the extreme challenges families face when a child is diagnosed with T1D, including the emotional toll on everyone. What unfolds next is the wonderful discovery this family made as they welcomed an extraordinary dog into their lives. Hope may be "the thing with feathers", but in this case, it has fur.

ELLE AND COACH came in the mail yesterday and I knew I would enjoy it but, wow, I couldn't put it down! I think I was crying from about page 50 on. It was heart wrenching, it was beautiful and it was inspiring and I loved every page. So very good!
