Reviewer: Walter Buenafe, MD (University of Chicago Pritzker School of Medicine)
Description: This is the second edition (previous edition 1988) of a comprehensive text of medical toxicology.
Purpose: It is meant to be a reference text for all in the medical community, although its scope may be beyond those without a medical degree.
Audience: Toxicologists, emergency physicians, occupational physicians, and critical care physicians may benefit the most from this text. The author is a clinical professor of toxicology at UCLA and a consultant toxicologist to the Los Angeles Poison Information Center.
Features: The book features many useful tables and figures that help to simplify the information. Also included are a multitude of references for each chapter. The text is assembled in an attractive fashion. Unique features include eight color plates of various snakes and pit vipers and 17 appendixes that include (among other things) information on national poison control centers, occupational medicine, and pediatric drugs.
Assessment: Overall, the text is an outstanding, comprehensive, and up-to-date reference on medical toxicology. It would be useful in a medical library and would see frequent use in the practice of toxicology or emergency medicine. The second edition comes nine years after the first and includes new information on a number of drugs and other chemicals. Additionally, the references in the new edition are up-to-date, with most published after the first edition.

Booknews
A massive reference for poison center health professionals, hospital emergency-department and critical-care physicians, industrial hygienists, regulatory personnel, and others in the medical or health care industry. Covers the main topics principles of poison management, drugs, the home, chemicals, and natural toxins in each area of the world. Avoids the temptation to extrapolate from animal data to clinical experience, and cites animal studies only to indicate the mechanism of action of toxic effects. First published in 1988 by Elsevier as "Medical Toxicology" and here both updated and augmented with topics that reviewers, physicians, and students found missing. Includes drawings of toxic plants and eight pages of color photographs of common poisonous snakes from around the world. Annotation c. by Book News, Inc., Portland, Or.
