Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature
Ellie McDoodle is a little girl with big responsibilities. Not only must she select the perfect furry or feathered friend to research for a school project, but she must also pet-sit for her neighbor, Mrs. Morrow. After it dawns on Ellie that Alix, Mrs. Morrow's African Grey parrot, will be the perfect topic for her project, the fun begins, or so Ellie thinks initially. As Ellie soon learns though, it is not all fun and games. Alix flies away and it seems that Ellie will never find him. Ben Ben, the Monkey Boy, Ellie's younger brother, is sad because his new friend, Alix, is missing. Ellie's older siblings are in debate over the perfect family pet with no regard to Ellie's dilemma. Then there is Marc, the annoying boy at the pet store, and Glenda, or "Armadillo Girl" as Ellie affectionately refers to her. In the end, all characters and situations come together for the perfect conclusion. This delightful book presents real life challenges, such as dealing with siblings, confronting the fear of public speaking, and being responsible in a humorous and entertaining manner. The illustrations add a different layer of humor and a visual interpretation of the text. Reviewer: Allison Fetters
School Library Journal
Gr 2–4—Ellie's family is obsessed with pets; her siblings can't agree on what they want, and their parents aren't sure they support any of their choices. At school, Ellie is assigned a multimedia class presentation on an animal. Using a journal format with her doodles on every page, she writes about bird-sitting her neighbor's African grey parrot and does research on the bird for her report. Ellie at first dislikes but then befriends the son of the pet-store owners, loses the parrot, and keeps up with the menagerie her siblings bring home. Interspersed in this story are instructions for games, yoga breathing, and crafts that add to the fun. The book can be read alone, but readers of the first two books will get some of the jokes that are repeated throughout the series. Exuberant black-and-white sketches and dialogue balloons enliven the pages. Recommend this one to fans of Sara Pennypacker's Clementine, Marissa Moss's "Amelia's Notebooks" series (S & S), and Charise Mericle Harper's "Just Grace" series (Houghton).—Debbie Hoskins, Grand Rapids Public Library, MI

It's camping time for Ellie McDougal but she's not happy about it. Ellie's parents have to go out of town, so she and her baby brother, Ben-Ben, will be going with their Aunt Ug, Uncle Ewing, and cousins Erick, Deanna, and Tiffie. All of the camping supplies are packed and ready to go, including Ellie's sketchbook. Will the trip be as bad as Ellie is afraid it will be? Through the pages of Ellie's sketchbook, she tells the story of her camping trip. She meets a 13-year-old boy by the name of Scott. He is one interesting character, as he speaks French, Japanese, and English. He wants to learn to draw, which is something that Ellie can help him with. He has to leave but never tells Ellie that he is leaving Campsite 137. She is saddened by her friend leaving. Her opinions of her relatives change throughout the book. In the beginning, she thinks of Erick as being a dinosaur but that changes as it goes along. Erick also collects frogs and thinks he has found the best frog, but holds him too tight -- Oh, no! The illustrations are very cute and add meaning to the story. The characters you meet in this book are very unusual. The storyline keeps young readers interested. This is a must read for children ages 9-12 who would love to be entertained with a good story and a very easy read. With fewer words and many pictures on each page than most books for this age group, this is a delight. Pack up your bags and get ready for a camping adventure with Ellie along -- it's bound to be a great time! I hope that there are more exciting adventures of ELLIE MCDOODLE books in the future. **Reviewed by: Bri P.

    Wonderful kid-friendly read!

This is a terrific book. The text alone would make a wonderful kid-friendly story, but the cartoon illustrations make it! It's amazing how simple the drawings are, yet they capture so much! I also love how honest Ellie is--a truly authentic kid's voice. And, on top of all that, it's pretty funny!

Highly recommended! Kids will love it!

When Ellie has to give a report on an exotic pet, she has a hard time picking a topic. When the neighbor asks her to watch her parrot, Ellie decides this would make a perfect animal for her project. The bird, however, doesn't want to learn the lines Ellie is trying to make it speak for her report. Instead, it would rather fly around playing with Ellie's little brother and insulting Ellie. To make matters worse, the parrot flies out the window one afternoon. With the help of some unusual people - a zookeeper, a librarian, some good friends, and her pet-obsessed family - Ellie will try everything she can to get the parrot back. Will Ellie succeed before her neighbor comes home? Will she do well on her report? A fun, realistic fiction book for girls who like such books as the DIARY OF A WIMPY KID series. The characters are entertaining, the plot is interesting, and the illustrations complement the text well. Readers who like realistic fiction and animal stories will enjoy reading ELLIE MCDOODLE: BEST FRIENDS FUR-EVER.

    I Also Recommend:

    read again and again

This is one of my daughter's number one favorite series for reading again and again! She likes it so much that she has even chosen it as a birthday gift for a friend. It was also one of her younger sister's first chapter books, because lots of pictures makes for easy reading.

It is similar in format to WIMPY KID, but all of my kids - including my son - like these books better.

Not only are there great illustrations and a good story, but the rules for numerous groups games for kids are given as a part of the story.
