Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature - Jennie DeGenaro
Beginning readers enjoy stories that encourage them to wonder what will happen next. Will Ellie receive a gold star from her teacher? She does everything her teacher asks, but something always happens to prevent her from receiving that coveted gold star. Other children get stars, and Ellie feels her time will never come. Ellie's father realizes how disappointed she is and tries to cheer her up. He takes her to see the stars in the sky and points to an especially bright one. He tells her, "That is Ellie's star." The next day, she writes a poem about her star and gives it to her teacher. When the teacher reads Ellie's poem, she gives her a gold star. Ellie has never been happier. Illustrations are colorful and children will enjoy the pictures accompanying the text. There are several worthwhile suggestions for adults who read the book with the child. There are currently seventeen books in the "Reading Corner" series, of which this title is a part. The controlled vocabulary and repetition of words will help the child develop word recognition skills while encouraging a love of reading. Reviewer: Jennie DeGenaro
