Children's Literature
Poor Elliot Stone! Not only does he have to miss the party of the century; he is sentenced to spend an entire month of his summer vacation at Lake Bomoseen with his parents, annoying little sister Sam, and baby brother. As they travel to their destination, Elliot's father regales his family with tales of the infamous Loch Ness Monster and convinces Elliot that, if he is lucky, there might be a similar creature in Lake Bomoseen! Things continue to look up when Elliot's best friend Jake comes to keep him company, and a feisty girl named Marley rounds out the trio. Sure enough, before long the kids do sight a creature they are certain is a sea monster. And if that is not exciting enough, Elliot has fallen in love with Marley (don't all fourth grade boys wonder how to concentrate when girls smell "like delicious cotton candy?"). Unfortunately, it turns out both Marley's dad and Elliot's are in danger of losing their jobs. Luckily for them, their clever children are determined to save them by coming up with a "monster" of a plan. The premise is all right, but there are many problems with the actual story. The biggest problem is Elliot himself. He himself admits "being annoying is my specialty." In addition to being rather unlikable, his voice is inconsistent. At times he sounds like a very young child, unsure what to call braids; other times his vocabulary is quite precocious ("phenomenon," "agenda"). Overall, both the (somewhat predictable) story and the drawings are okay. But with bookstores closing doors and publishing houses tightening budgets, the real mystery here is if "okay" is good enough when there are so many better books to read. Reviewer: Naomi Milliner

    more from this reviewer

    Elliot Stone does it again!!

Elliot has done it again! His newest mystery grabbed the attention of my after-school book club kiddos (ABC Reviewers) and they begged me to keep reading. Several of them had read the first two Elliot books (Elliot Stone and the Mystery of the Alien Mom and Elliot Stone and the Mystery of the Backyard Treasure). The ABC Reviewers were thrilled to hear that the third book was available, and they feel it is the best one yet!

Elliot is convinced that his month-long summer vacation is going to be BORING. It turns out to be anything but that with the mystery of the sea monster. Elliot makes a new friend (Marley) in this book, and along with his best friend (Jake), they work together to problem-solve a very serious issue at Lake Bomoseen. This book makes a great read-aloud, as well as an independent read for middlers. L.P. Chase, you¿ve done it again! Congrats on a terrific children¿s mystery book.
