With each interview I could visualize as if I were really there in person listening to the person relating their story. All of my senses came alive while reading. The author brought each persons story to life for me. I have shared with my child, friends and family. This is a must have for every family so that we will never forget the efforts and sacrafices others made to come to the wonderful contry.

This is my all time favorite book. The reader gets a clear look at the immigrants life(usually very difficult) before they left their home country, the trip to Ellis Island and the struggle to learn a new way of life. I only wish that there could have been many more stories. Thank You Peter Morton Coan for collecting these stories.

if you are interested in history then you will enjoy first hand storytelling from the immigrants who came through Ellis Island. I only wish there were more narratives. I want to know more.

I was impressed with the details in this book. I've looked for a way to find out information on Ellis Island for a long time. My grandfather came through there and I wanted to know how they decided who was to stay here. Great book.

I'm not quite finished yet but have found it to be a very interesting book. The beginning written by the doctors was a bit boring but the stories are great. I have to say the pictures that are included aren't real clear on the Nook and I would like to see them in a paperbook.

Overview
Like the Statue of Liberty who lifts her lamp nearby, Ellis Island symbolizes the hope, the promise, and the dreams of freedom and opportunity that lure impoverished and persecuted immigrants to seek a better life in America. Between 1892 and 1954, however, it was far more than a symbol; for millions, it was the final hurdle between them and the realization of their dreams. Indeed, if you were born in the United States, it's quite likely that at least one of your ancestors passed through Ellis Island. In Ellis Island Interviews, more than 100 immigrants from all over Europe and the Middle East offer accounts of those difficult steps that carried them to...
