Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature - Anne Pechnyo
In the latest installment following the life of the beloved patchwork elephant, Elmer, Super El needs help fixing his torn outfit. Afraid that the other animals will laugh at him, Super El enlists Elmer to distract everyone while they get safely to Aunt Zelda's. Through telling jokes, confusing others, and crafty distractions, Elmer is able to deliver the small elephant to Aunt Zelda, and she is able to mend his outfit. Readers and listeners who have followed along on Elmer's other adventures will enjoy the introduction of Super El and the creative ways that Elmer is able to deliver his friend unnoticed. Showing Elmer's kindness and friendship, McKee uses a fantastical, super elephant to show ways one can help someone in need. McKee's familiar, albeit bright and imaginative, gouache illustrations support his text, sure to interest the youngest children listening to the text being read aloud. The simple word choice makes the text accessible to budding readers. Reviewer: Anne Pechnyo

PreS-Gr 1—Super El is not feeling very super. He ripped his costume and needs a way to get it mended without all of the animals seeing him in his less-than-super state. The always-kind Elmer volunteers to distract the other animals while he gets it fixed. Elmer uses jokes, sticks, and bird friends to keep the elephants, lions, tigers, hippos, rabbits, crocodiles, and monkeys from noticing Super El as he slinks past them. When the two finally make their way to Aunt Zelda, readers are treated to her hard-of-hearing humor before Super El zooms off into the sky. The spreads are done in vivid colors and have everything Elmer fans have come to expect. This adorable tale shows young readers that even superheroes need help once in a while.—Kris Hickey, Columbus Metropolitan Library, OH
