Children's Literature - Carrie Hane Hung
While his cousin, Wilbur, was using ventriloquism to entertain the animals, Elmer, the patchwork elephant, notices that the birds were missing. When he finds the birds hiding in a cave, Elmer learns that his feathered friends are scared of a large bird that bullies and threatens them. The patchwork elephant tries to help out his friends. Although Elmer asks the big, bully bird to be considerate of the other birds, his request falls on deaf ears. The bird refuses to be kind to the small birds. Elmer comes up with an idea to help his friends, the little birds. With the help of the other animals, the little birds, and Wilbur, Elmer puts his plan in action. Brightly colored illustrations fill the pages and support the story. This book is part of the "Elmer Books" series which cover the adventures of Elmer the patchwork elephant. Readers may also want to read Leo Lionni's Swimmy, which involves a fish trying to survive against large fish. Reviewer: Carrie Hane Hung
