Editorial Reviews

School Library Journal
PreSThese books feature a colorful patchwork elephant in their title subjects. Elmer's winsome personality shines through as he romps with a variety of wild animals from all over the worldpolar bears and leopards, elephants and kangaroosin this jungle fantasyland. Elmer's Friends, the most sophisticated of the four, leaves readers with the message that we can be different and still get along. The other texts are fairly generic, according to the concept depicted; most of the illustrations, done in bold, textured paints, are appealing and will encourage responses from toddlers. Solid choices for the board-book set.Linda Wicher, Highland Park Public Library, IL
From the Publisher

"A welcome addition to early years resources, for monolingual and bilingual teachers alike, as they provide opportunities for lots of discussion in and about a variety of languages."  —Books for Keeps

Not a hardcover, but a boardbook

This book is not at all what I was expecting. It is described as a hardcover. I expected to receive a hardcover book with a dustjacket. What I received is a boardbook.

I purchased it to give as a gift to my son's school library. The school library prefers harcover books, so the dust jackets can be protected with mylar, after call numbers and bar codes have been added. This book is not suitable for a school library.

I will keep this book anyway. Instead of giving it to the library, I will give it to my niece as a gift. It's not what I intended, but it will have to do. I will have to keep looking for this title in hardcover.

This book is appropriate for pre-schoolers.

A great book for my toddler!

My three year old loves animals and Elmer the patchwork elephant is a great series of books. With Elmer you can work on teaching colors with your child. Also, with this book you can talk to your child about similarities and differences between all of Elmers friends along with animal sounds. The mouse is small, the owl is wise, the kangaroo jumps high, the zebra his stripes and the leopard has spots, the giraffe is tall and the snake is long. The lesson of the story is that all of Elmer's friends are different, but they all love Elmer. It is a simple book but I enjoy all the teaching opportunities and the good lesson it teaches. My son loves the bright colors and all the different animals. My son is also learning English and Chinese and it is difficult to find bilingual books. So this is a great book for us since it is bilingual.
