A number of fun board books aim to entertain the very young. Elmer's New Friend by David McKee is the latest addition to the series starring the patchwork elephant and his friends. The jungle is abuzz with animals eager to find out the identity of Elmer's new pal, and with each question, they gain a new clue. As the black-and-white checkered elephant, Wilbur, points out, "But, Elmer, if you have a new friend, then we all have a new friend." A mirror in the last page reveals the answer. (Mar.) This book is not at all what I was expecting. It is described as a hardcover. I expected to receive a hardcover book with a dustjacket. What I received is a boardbook. I purchased it to give as a gift to my son's school library. The school library prefers harcover books, so the dust jackets can be protected with mylar, after call numbers and bar codes have been added. This book is not suitable for a school library. I will keep this book anyway. Instead of giving it to the library, I will give it to my niece as a gift. It's not what I intended, but it will have to do. I will have to keep looking for this title in hardcover. This book is appropriate for babies and preschoolers.

I bought this book just because it was Elmer--I hadn't even read it at the store. We got home, and I showed it to our daughter (then 6 months old). She just loved it, and we read it over and over. At the end of the book, theres a mirror, and when the baby looks in it, she sees that she's Elmer's new friend! I've read the book to my daughter now atleast 100 times, and she loves it every time.
