Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature - Marilyn Courtot
Elmer the checkered elephant is familiar to many young readers. In this board book, his job is to introduce readers to opposites. He is pictured chatting with a bird that is resting on his trunk to demonstrate the difference between big and small. Tiger and tortoise feature fast and slow. A rather strange looking adult lion is shown watching over a trio of sleeping cubs and thus the opposites—awake and asleep. Giraffe is leading a porcupine and it is easy to see the difference between tall and short. Other comparisons include hot/cold, happy/sad, whispers/shouts, and fat/thin. The closing depiction of a black and white checked elephant seems to leave the pattern and is not really crystal clear in its message. Fans of Elmer may find this book appealing. Ele- fantastic!

This book offers beautiful artwork to attract babies attention. The pages have short easy sentences that are great for the short attention spans of toddlers.
