    Not worth the hype.

I've read the first three books in this series. The ideas in them are novel and interresting (reminds me more of D&D without the magic users). The author is decent is good with imagery, but doesn't develop the characters very well (everyone, including Elric are architypal and not much else). Love interests are shallow and insulting to women (all major characters are male and the women are depicted as sluts). The individual stories feel like filled out short stories (pace is quick and flows well, but many interresting points are simply glossed over). The endings are anticlimactic, but as long as you can just pick up the next book, that's not too bad. I would recommend this book as one of the few antihero books, but if you're expecting Lestat or Hanibal, look elsewhere.

A great dark Fantasy, anti-hero tale.

More impressive for being decades old. Not many authors have the guts to be so dark, or can do it so well. It's nearly impossible to cheer for Elric, yet it's just as impossible to set him down. Why? Because Moorcock is a master of his craft.

Even better the next time around

I just finished the new Elric 'The Dreamthief's Daughter', which expands the series without once 'cheapening' it -- you'll be amazed how he achieves it! This sent me back to the first Elric book in this particular edition. I love the Robert Gould covers and Gould has continued his themes with the cover of The Dreamthief's Daughter. There is something about this series which has an authenticity, a tragic reality, very few other books like it have. As if Ibsen had decided to write Sword and Sorcery -- and then add a touch of Jerry Lewis for the heck of it! The prose is lush and reads well aloud and Moorcock clearly relishes language, yet language and description are never secondary to the driving force of character and plot. This first book is not the best of the series, but it is the best to start with. If you've forgotten how good Moorcock is, compared to his raft of sometimes more famous imitators, check Elric out and then try Dancers at the End of Time. This guy is one of our great writers. The Washington Post says so. And I heartily agree. LMS.

You will not regret reading this.

This is without a doubt one of the best fantasy books ever written. It boasts excellent character development which makes you feel as though you actually know the characters. The only thing bad about this book is that you might not be able to sleep until you finish it.

This is one of the Greatest books every written.

This entire Saga is by far on the list of Greatest of all books written. It is very very awesome. If you have a love for fantasy then you will love it aswell. Michael Moorcock leaves out all that slow[censored by Barnes and Noble, thank you for correcting me because we should not speak our own language] that makes books boring. You should read all of the saga and two books out of the saga about elric: 'The Fortress of the Pearl' (which is my favorite elric book) and 'Revenge of the Rose.'
