Overview

Think of New Orleans and images of jazz and Delta blues abound in dazzling strokes of musical history. Loren Pickford describes his beloved hometown as the place where "the big river swallows all footsteps on its long sweep to the Gulf of Mexico." From the very first strains of his title cut on Elysian Fields, he paints vivid musical pictures reflecting the city's colorful sights and distinctive sounds that he describes in his whimsical liner notes. The album, named for a street that runs through every neighborhood of New Orleans, works wonders as both an eclectic documentation of Louisiana's storied musical saga and a purely entertaining series of impressions through the eyes of a well-traveled musician. Beginning with the originals, the soaring brassy title track opens the disc with a combination of fire and flash, with Pickford having a grand old time intertwining the trumpet, sax, and flute. "Laureen," dedicated to his daughter, is a silky, romantic straight flute ballad, while Pickford stretches his jazz chops in tandem with Leroy Jones' trumpet on "Street Line for Rodney." He is just as spirited with his cover versions of a wide variety of standards, including "Melancholy Baby," McCoy Tyner's "Three Flowers," and Jobim's "Zingaro."
