Overview

The logging industry in eastern Texas is booming, and Deborah Vandermark plans to assist her family's business now that she's completed college. Unexpectedly, her best friend, Lizzie Decker, accompanies her back home--fleeing a wedding and groom she has no interest in. Deborah, the determined matchmaker, puts her sights on uniting her brother and dear friend in a true love match.

Deborah soon meets Dr. Christopher Clayton, a much-needed addition to the town. As their lives intersect, Deborah realizes that she has a much greater interest in medicine and science than the bookkeeping she was trained in. But when typhoid begins to spread and Lizzie's jilted fiance returns, Deborah wonders if true love can overcome such obstacles...for those dearest to her, and for herself.

    Great to read

This is a wonderful series. I am now on Book 3 (Hope Rekindled).. all of Tracie Peterson books that I have read are good Christian books to read. The story is so interesting and you can't put the book down. I could hardly wait for the next one in the series and then the next. She quotes God in her books and often times, it really helps me to see things in my own life in a different perspective. You won't be sorry if you read this series. called Striking a Match.

    Great Read!

This is a good book, not too long or too short. I like historical romances and the author does a good job of describing life in Texas in the 1880's. I will definately look into the following books in the series.

    Biblical Values Intertwined Throughout

This book, filled with God-fearing homebodies, superstitious precautioners, and arrogant Easterners alike, began with an interestingly precarious situation. Tracie Peterson effectively communicated the morals, thoughts, and..essences, of the characters in a simple way.
Unfortunately, on the negative end, I honestly got a little bored with it towards the middle. I thought that the story lacked detail, which made events seem to happen too fast. Other times they happened too slow. And then the heart-warming ending I'd hoped would unfold, well, didn't.
Embers of Love is a book with a storyline unique in its own rights. The author provided a nice setting and realistic characters. If you are at all interested in this book, and if you don't mind waiting on a satisfying ending until the end of the series, then I would suggest for you to read Embers of Love.

Highly recommend this book-full of wonder

Tracy's effort to touch the past is shown in Embers of Love. It is full of family devotion, betrayal, friendship and dedication. Definately worth the time to see things as they were and yet as they are. Makes one think of their own family and friends and compare the past and present. It is a quiet love story and dedication to that love and understanding.

Real life faith is beautifully woven throughout the story

Tracie Peterson does a wonderful job of making the faith life of the characters believable. All too often the characters of Christian fiction can come off as preachy or cliché or like their faith/religion is just tacked on to the edges of the story. This story is one of the best examples I have ever read of the characters naturally living out their faith. Furthermore, the conversations they have about tough or important topics (which inevitably lead to Christ) don¿t seem stilted but like normal questions and struggles that real people have.
However, I was disappointed in the writing style as a whole. I haven¿t read any of Peterson¿s contemporary novels, but I have read some of her other historical novels (Ladies of Liberty is one of my favorites series) so I was surprised at the overall lack of strong plot development in this book. In Embers of Love, Peterson wrote excellent scenes but their connections seemed weak. This was worsened by the fact that there was two main characters. I liked both characters but in the beginning the changes in point of view seemed vague, making the story hard to get into and the characters seem less developed. This did improve as the book continued though. After reading other reviews, it sounds like book two picks up exactly where this book ends, so that could be the reason for the seeming lack of plot follow through. Despite this, Peterson does wrap the story up satisfactorily and does do a nice job of illustrating God how orchestrates the lives of the characters in His plans.
