Birthdays aren't my thing.
It's hard to get too excited about the day that marks the anniversary of your mother's death. It's not that I blame myself for her not being here. No one could have known she wouldn't survive childbirth. It's not that I miss her either. I mean, I never knew her in the first place. But it is the one day each year that at some point I'll be forced to ask myself, Was it worth it? Was my life worth taking hers?
I stared out the bus window, avoiding. Steph was blabbering on, something about the perfect dress, completely absorbed in what she was saying. She was relentless when it came to the science of shopping. I could feel her watching me, disappointed with my cheer level. Buildings flashed past through the frame of the smudged glass and I couldn't help but wish my seventeenth birthday tomorrow would slide by in the same hazy blur.
"Violet Eden!" Steph said sternly, sucking me out of my trance. "We have your dad's Amex, a green light, and no specified limit." Her mock rebuke morphed into a devious grin. "What more could a girl want as a birthday present?"
Technically, it was my Amex. My name, my signature. It just happened to be connected to Dad's account. A by-product of being the only person at home who actually bothered to pay any bills.
I knew Steph wouldn't understand if I told her I wasn't in the mood, so I lied. "I can't go shopping today. I...um...I have a training session."
She raised her eyebrows at me. For a moment I thought she was going to call me out on my fake alibi. But then she segued onto a topic we seemed to be discussing more and more often as of late.
"With Lincoln?"
I shrugged, trying not to let on how much just the mention of Lincoln affected me. Although the training part wasn't true, I did have plans to see him later on and was already doing my best not to keep a minute-by-minute countdown.
Steph rolled her eyes. "Honestly, one of these days I'm gonna tell him you'd prefer to get all hot and sweaty with him in a different kind of way!" She threw me her bitchy smile—something she usually reserves for other people.
I sat back and let her vent. It was easier that way. Steph didn't get it and I couldn't blame her—I'd never told her all of the reasons why training was so important to me. Some things are just too hard to talk about.
"You do realize you're turning into some kind of sports geek, don't you? And don't pretend you actually like them all. I know for a fact that you hate long-distance running." Steph couldn't understand how anyone would rather go rock climbing or boxing in place of shopping.
"I get a kick out of training with him," I said, hoping to put an end to the conversation, even though she wasn't completely off base about the running. If I didn't have Lincoln's butt to stare at the whole time, motivation would be a lot harder to come by.
I busied myself by rummaging through my backpack, which was jammed with all the books they force you to take home on the last day before break. Steph didn't seem put off.
"It's like he's training you for battle or something." Her eyes lit up. "Hey, maybe he has some underground fight club and he's grooming you!"
"That's it, Steph. Definitely."
I didn't want to be talking about this, didn't want to have to admit the round-the-clock desire I had to be with Lincoln. It was like something deep within me found comfort in his presence.
Crushing with the best of 'em, Vi!
Too bad it was a lost cause. It had been that way ever since the moment I'd first met him two years ago. He was a late entry into a self-defense class I'd signed up for. When he was partnered with me, what I thought was going to be another mediocre attempt on my part to get fit and strong became so much more.
I never found out why Lincoln had taken the class. He clearly knew more than the instructor, moving through the exercises with the kind of ease and grace that made it clear he was in another league. After the first couple of weeks, when I was finally able to string more than two words together around him, I asked him why he was there. He shrugged it off, saying it was always good to do a refresher class.
By the end of the three-month course, I was learning more from him than from the instructor, and he offered to give me some kickboxing lessons. Now I get the best of both worlds. I get stronger every day—our list of activities has expanded to include rock climbing, running, even an archery course—and I get to hang out with Lincoln. It's perfect...almost.
"Well, I guess that means we're going shopping tomorrow then." Steph pouted but couldn't keep it up. She can never stay mad for long.
Unfortunately, she was right. I knew Dad had given her strict instructions, due to my lack of spirit and his lack of know-how, to make sure I had a new dress for my birthday dinner tomorrow night. The clock was ticking—shopping was inevitable.
"I can't wait," I said, flashing her a well-practiced fake smile from my birthday repertoire.
As the bus slowed for its next stop, Steph stood up from our seat, three rows from the back. She was convinced only the wannabes sat right at the back, the geeks at the front, and the goths/weirdos right behind them. That left about three rows we could work with, the ones that apparently put us in the not-trying-to-but-can't-help-being-cool section. The ironic thing was, if judged purely on academic achievements, Steph was the biggest geek I knew. Of course, she never publicized the fact that she was some kind of borderline genius.
She wrapped her narrow frame around the metal pole near the doors, donned her favorite pair of D&G sunglasses, and blew me a kiss. I laughed. Luckily for me, Steph wasn't only a label girl. For all the designer clothes she paraded around in, she was surprisingly balanced. The fact that she was from a seriously moneyed-up family and was usually wearing something that cost more than my entire wardrobe didn't adversely affect our friendship. I didn't overly care for material possessions and she didn't overly care that I didn't.
"Do me a favor?" she said, making her way out the door, unfazed by the logjam of kids sardined behind her. "While you're drooling over Mr. Fantastic, make sure you jab him in the gut a few times for taking up all your free time and depriving me of my bff."
"Sure thing," I said, blowing her a kiss back and ignoring the twinge of guilt I felt about lying to my best friend.
Violet Eden is not your average teenage girl - even without what awaits on her 17th birthday, a day that she isn't looking forward to since it's also the anniversary of her mother's death. It's always just been Violet and her father. They have a good relationship, but he isn't around much due to his busy schedule. That is one of the reasons Violet is very independent. Her father trusts her completely and she is the type of person who would never misuse that trust in anyway.
Control is very important to her since an incident when she was younger. Since then she has done everything to never feel like she felt that day. During a self-defence class, she meets Lincoln, who has become one of very few important people in Violet's life and continues to train her. She gets the training she wants while fulfilling the desire she has to be with him. If only he had the same need.
Something unexpected happens on Violet's birthday with Lincoln, but before she can fully process what, he runs off. Violet never runs and goes to gets some answers. Nothing could have prepared her for what she finds out. Lincoln a Grigori - part angel and part human - and so is she.
I've been anticipating Embrace since I first came across it in 2010. So you can imagine how ecstatic I was when I found out I'd be able to read it. Since I've been anticipating it for so long, I had high hopes and doubts after wanting this book for so long that it would meet those expectations. It didn't, it surpassed them! The mythology Jessica created is exceptional. Some of the myths used are known and the combination of the familiar and what Jessica created and expanded on blurred the lines between fantasy and reality in a way that I never felt the need to stretch my imagination.
I really like Violet, who is just one of many fantastic characters. Each with very distinct personalities that set one apart from the other. When meeting each character, I felt like they had a back-story and didn't start existing the minute their names were written and that their stories would support their actions, which is something that makes them more realistic to me. I look forward to getting to know them better - the good, bad or the ones in a gray area.
Embrace is an amazing debut. An action-packed, intense and unique read that's truly captivating and will leave you eagerly anticipating the sequel. The excitement of an entire series in one book - which is just the start. Books like Embrace are the reason I love fantasy so much.

Some angel novels I love to death, and others I can't seem to get through the full book. Now you're all wondering how I feel about Embrace? well it definitely is in the "I enjoyed it" pile! To break it down even more, I must say that I enjoyed the first half much more than the latter half. I went through the first half in ONE sitting, however I reached a bump in the middle and things slowed down in the book, which in turn made me lose a bit of interest in it. However, the book in the end was magnificent and I am SO excited to get my hands on the second book because i REALLY did get addicted to Violet's story in the end!
Ok now let me explain a bit more. This novel has a love triangle. I often side with one of the sides immediately and stick to it till the end, but I am SO annoyed that as SOON as Violet gets with someone, I start liking the other! I mean sheesh, Violet, why couldn't we agree on one man? I was confused, so I understand why Violet went from one to the other and just didn't know where her heart belonged to. Throughout the book I found Violet to be a bit childish, and sometimes even straight out hateful because of how she treated Lincoln, and then Pheonix, the other guy of the love triangle. I just did not enjoy her indecisive mentality and that she assumes everyone should give her a break because she just found out she will never live a normal life.
I really liked the plot, in that it was more dynamic, problems happen, they get solved, then more problems occur. It was centered around one problem, but it didn't suffocate the whole book, there was room for other implications, complications, and issues to arise. Also, towards the end, you discover things (even though you discover them before Violet does), that are so shocking that you just want to know WHY but you never get to that since the book ends. WHICH IS WHY I NEED to get my hands on the second book! which I can not wait to see its cover, if it is as gorgeous as the first one, then I'm a happy reader/book cover lover.

Take away the angel angle and this book is a book that has been written hundreds of times. Nothing new or exciting. I can almost understand why this is appealing to younger readers because it is NEW to them. But as I said unless books like Twilight appeal to you don't waste your time or money. It is the same old triangle that writers have used since the first novel was written. Moves relatively fast the first half of book, then it plods. My 21 year ojd niece gave me this book (it is her new FAV) i should have known better but she really wanted tto share this book with me.if you decide to read it check it out at the library and save some money.

I was instantly enthralled by it and I’m not one to enjoy books about angels. Embrace isn’t like other angel books though because despite having angels in it, the story remains focused on characters, while giving the reader insight about how the angel mythology works.
Violet can be a bit naïve, but she comes across as very sincere and real. She’s not terribly boy crazy or ditzy –though she does have her moments with both Linc and Phoenix; she’s very easy to relate to. Her journey from normal girl to angel is actually exactly how you’d expect it to be. Violet reacts in the right way….but you’ll have to read the book to see what I think the right way is.
Now about those boys: Linc is okay, I guess. That’s the thing with a possible love triangle though. Readers will always pick one that they see as the best. And for me, that wasn’t Linc. I liked him, but he got me quite angry here and there. Phoenix, on the other hand, is sexy and cocky, with just the right amount of sweet. He’s not innocent or all good, but I couldn’t help but be drawn to his darkness. Readers will certainly eat these two boys up!
Embrace takes readers on a wild ride of ups, downs, and startling realizations. It’s the first in a trilogy, so while this one starts the trio off very strong, there is so much more to look forward to. The fighting and action is intense, the smoldering, sexy scenes are as steamy as ever, and the plot will keep you hooked. Embrace will hold up as an easy and favorite read for me…and should for you too.

I loved it!! Can not wait for the next book in this series... it had suspense and action and romance. Sometimes it was confusing about what was happening, but it made the ending even better!!! Highly recomend this book!<3

This book,connects those who have loved but could not have,holds your emotions as if you were back n time, the hatred you felt from your first betrail of love trust an innoccence,something we all have learned from but also wish could have been diffrent life is full of darkness an light who are we? Me im light fighting alot of darkness,negative energy!!!!!! Its hard when the darkness can fool u!!!!!!

It would have to be a bouquet of single words just to express how I felt after reading it. Amazing, warming, sad, thrilling, swoony, and so much more!
Jessica has really impressed me on how she craftly portrayed a sort of conspiracy 'not always black or white' aspect on the whole angel theory. It is very original and I couldn't help but to be enthralled by its possibilities. It just makes me hungry for more of the history of angels. "Light" Angels are not always good - they can be prideful, stubborn, and egotistical; and equally, "Dark" Angels sway a balance into things that are not always 'bad/wrong/evil'. You just can't help but to be open eared and listen on to Jessica's angelic world.
Violet's character is okay. I enjoyed her in the beginnning but in the rough parts nearing the end she made a lot of over-exaggerated mistakes. More so that I believe many readers will dislike her for this reason, but I'd just like to say that part of those stupid actions was because she was 'tainted' (trying not to give spoilers here). To those who have already read Embrace I hope you know which part I'm talking about. Anyways, Lincoln is a sweetheart and he was doing what he thought was right, but I think he was way too perfect to realistically believe in. Phoenix on the other hand, I am still fanning myself on how hot this guy is! So, I can't really say much about him because my senses are dulled by his awesomesauce! lol =) Dibs! He is swoon worthy for sure!
Speaking about senses; I didn't really grasp that concept. In a way it's understandable, but I just don't comprehend why 'apples', and why 'always' the same smell and taste for every 'different' exile? I would have enjoyed a little more background on this.
The trials and tribulations of Violet is awing for a girl of her age to be going through. I know she is flawed because of some of her actions, but that is what makes her an appealing character - her imperfections. No one is perfect and that is reality.
Embrace by Jessica Shirvington is an action-packed journey that will take you away!
By the end your heart will surely be captivated by one man! Who, will be up to you. A 2012 MUST READ!

It is beautiful. I love it so much more then the final cover! But I don't get to choose that detail. :( LOL
Well right now there are a lot of angel books that are coming out, and some are not as good as others....not this one! I loved this book. I loved everything about it. I loved all the characters and their personalities. I feel when it is a great book the characters really grow with the story. This is exactly what happened with this story. I think when this happens, some of the greatest stories happen.
You meet Violet. Violet is learning a lot about her life and fast. Her father is never around, her mother died when she was born, she has the greatest friend in the world, and the guy of her dreams. But something is about to happen that she never thought would happen. She is half human, half angel. She has a lot that is about to happen and what is she going to do....push the guy who she thought she was in love with away to get closer to Phoenix, a strong handsome man for the bar.
But that is not all that is going to happen. This book is action packed from cover to cover. It has fight scenes, love scenes, and everything in between. I loved everything about this book and more. I am going to recommend this book to everyone that I know! You have to read Embrace!

Looking for an angel-themed mystery with a dash of romance? This just might be your perfect book. The author includes a quote with each chapter that emphasizes what is to come, the reader will most likely come to love those quotes. Violet and Lincoln are introduced to the reader first. Violet is an admirable main character, the reader will not find him/herself hating her or thinking "why did she do that?" much, at all. Lincoln is the love interest for the first portion of the novel, and even until the end. Lincoln is that all-around good guy. He is someone who could offer a shoulder to cry on and seems to always be there for his friends. However, he has more than a few secrets too...secrets that Violet should, perhaps, know about.
When Phoenix is first introduced in the novel, the reader will wonder just who and what he is. The author leaves him an enigma; he doesn't apologize for himself and literally has that "take me as I am" attitude. He becomes a bit of a love interest himself. The other characters function as supporting characters, the reader will enjoy meeting them as well. The plot itself is very fast-paced and developed down to the last detail. The author manages to give the reader enough details to keep the reader turning the pages, but doesn't reveal the full mystery.
The reader will find that the further he/she immerses him/herself in the book, the more intricate the plot becomes as well as the relationships between the characters. This book is nearly impossible to put down and worth reading cover to cover. Embrace is perfect for young adult/teen readers.

got this book I was on break from all thing angels. I had just finished
a lot of books with them and was just kind of done with that race. I
really didnt want ANYTHING to do with them. But, I worked through it
and found a wonderful new series to fall in love with. Jessica
Shirvington isnt afraid to go there if you know what I mean. With sexy
characters that you both love and love to hate. And a wonderful plot. I
couldnt put Embrace down. And unlike a lot of books out there. Embrace
has a meaning to the title. *I was recently sent a copy of book 2 in
this series (Embrace) called Entice. So I had to go back and reread
book 1. Which was a great idea as there were a lot of things that I had
forgotten the first time around. So even the second time reading
Embrace I fell in love with all the characters all over again. So
Embrace was a big 5 stars both times.Here is my org. review- Angels
have always had to dwell in the house of the lord. Always listen to the
word of god. But, what if angels had free will? Would it be good or bad?
Well Embrace answers this question......and its NOT pretty! This book
has something in common with the House of Night books by P.C and Kristen
Cast. That just because something is light doesn't always mean that it
is good. As the goddess Nyx says: Darkness does not alway equate to
evil, Just as Light does not always bring good. So my one BIG question
in this book is where is god in all of this. It seems that he/she has
taken a vacation and is not around right now. The angels have the reins
and are using them to their advantage. In the end this book was
wonderful. It was a little slow at times so take your time with it.
But it is worth reading! Ill leave you with some words from the book
and also from the bible. (yes the bible can have some really good end
lines lol! Even me being a witch I can't deny that) "This is your
fate, the destiny I have planned for you......" Jeremiah 13:25

Embrace is a must-read for lovers of paranormal romance! I was swept away by the characters, both good and evil!
5 reason count-down for why you HAVE to read Embrace!
5.)There is no down-time! Jessica Shirvington jumps straight to the action, and it just keeps on coming.
4.) The mythology in it is very interesting. I wrote my Masters Thesis on how popular culture treats religion, and there were so many references to stories from old religions that I just got swept away in the history!
3.) Violet is a kick-butt heroine, but she is also realistic. She really struggles with the realization that she's an angel, and even more, she struggles with controlling her powers. It's not a snap your fingers and she's awesome kind of thing. She has a difficult time growing into her powers, and she is still struggling near the end of the book--which means there's much more to come in the future!
2.) Phoenix--the oh-so-hot resident maybe good/maybe bad? guy. He is one of Violet's love interests. He's dark, foreboding, and mysterious--which I love. It's going to be interesting seeing how Phoenix turns out in the future books! I won't say much more about him because you MUST read it for yourself!
1.) Lincoln--yummy. He's Violet's other love interest, and he is just oh-so-adorable! He's the complete opposite of Phoenix, but I love him just as much! Again, I won't say any more because I don't want to spoil it...but, believe me, there is so much romance you're heart will never slow down!
So...in conclusion--one more time--YOU MUST READ THIS BOOK!!!!

The gorgeous cover drew me in instantly. From the get-go I figured it would be about angels due to the beautiful smokey wings “embracing” the girl’s back. I was very curious as to what the black feathers meant along with the description “A dark and heart-racing tale”. Once again, my mind wandered and I came to the assumption that the book was about about dark or fallen angels. I really liked how the cover got me thinking. I had so many questions and I just knew I wanted needed to read Embrace to find the answers and ease my internal inquiries.
I think the book summary does a good job of describing Embrace (even a little too good *spoiler warning*) so I’ll skip my usual, and personal quick-summary. Violet Eden has got to be one of my all-time favorite characters. Throughout the book I found myself relating to her on a deeper-level. I was really able to connect and share her feelings. Due to a horrible incident involving a pedo-teacher, Violet has developed into a very persistent and strong young woman. She’s adopted a “never again” attitude paired with a “won’t give up” mantra.
Like the average teenage girl, Violet’s time is occupied by homework, boys, and hanging with her best friend Steph. I completely understand Violet’s hell-no attitude when she’s thrust into a world filled with good and bad angels fighting for humanity’s dominion. Heavy words right? Joining a centuries-old battle is not something you decide lightly. A good portion of Embrace features Violet’s decision process on whether or not giving up her normal life for a legit “higher-calling” is worth the sacrifice. Of course, she doesn’t just sit around adding jelly beans to a scale, weighing the pros in cons. Nope. Violet experiences, on multiple occasions, the consequences involved in ignoring her calling.
Embrace had everything that I love in YA books. Our main character is thrust into a new world, forced to question her beliefs, faced with many obstacles yet – comes out stronger in the end. I’ll will say, you do find out by the end of book one whether Violet chooses to “embrace” her calling, but you’ll very surprised and heart-broken when you read about the elements that affected her decision. There’s a lot of action and deaths. When it comes to the ultimate good vs. evil showdown, they’re tends to be some major casualties. Of course, there’s also a little romance featured in a love triangle. Some find the love triangle tiring, but I personally didn’t mind Embrace’s version. The two guys completing Violet’s love-diabolical, are very different and unique and I eagerly followed along.
The last Embrace aspect I want need to mention is the mythology. I haven’t read many angel-esque novels, maybe a handful at the most. However, time in again I find the stories to be similar. When you’re using the same supernatural-being in various books it’s hard to make your book unique. I think Embrace has the unique down perfectly. The mythology surrounding angels, where they came from, how they came, what they want, what types, and so forth was refreshing and new.
I give Embrace a 4/5 rating. It’s one of my favorite books of 2012. Book two comes out September 2012 and you can bet I’ll be getting it when it does.

I loved this book but I dislike the longggg explainations. But people, KEEP READING THE SERIES! It gets so much better. Just got done reading the 3rd book. I cried.

Even better than I expected I picked this book not really knowing what to expect and was I surprised Violet isn't the girl who sits on the sidelines she is the type to fight back. And the love triangle is crazy I can't wait to finish reading the rest and i'm super excited for Endless this October and the 5th book already in the making Empower! :)

I think this book may be better suited to actual teens and not a great cross over. I found the book spent way too much time on forced dialogue just to build the background of the story. There is little depth to the characters and the themes are very common ones. If you love angel teen shuffle then go for it. But I don't think I'll be reading ant further.

Good paranormal romance read. Romance and suspense kept me reading. I kept guessing who Violet would end up with, Phoenix or Lincoln.Now on to book 2!
