This unlikely "translation" of source material from Shanachie's vaults is surpisingly effective. Well, not so surprising - the eerie keening of pipes and the lonely vocalizing of sean nòs make fine ambient fodder. Laswell's hip-hop remix of Karan Casey is especially nice, with turntable scratches and vibraphones coloring her haunting phrasing. With echoey, dub-heavy interpretations of works by Solas, Matt Molloy, and Jerry O'Sullivan, EMERALD AETHER should interest fans of Irish ...

All Music Guide - Dave Sleger
Now it's progressive bassist and programmer Bill Laswell's turn to take a whack at Celtic music. Here he tinkers with pieces by Jerry O'Sullivan, Solas, Karan Casey, Cathie Ryan and Matt Molloy, but nothing too revolutionary occurs. The reconstruction of Irish music? Perhaps, but it's been done to varying degrees by Tartan Amoebas, Martyn Bennett, Paul Mounsey, Dagda, Shooglenifty, Afro Celt Sound System and others, only years earlier.
