Editorial Reviews

Doody's Review Service
Reviewer: Darryl Conway, MA (University of Michigan)
Description: This is a concise guide to the practical clinical management of emergencies frequently encountered in a sports medicine setting. It provides a thorough, system-by-system overview of the most common issues.
Purpose: It is intended to be used as an accompaniment to clinical textbooks and courses for the practical management of various emergencies. The authors have done a good job of meeting this objective and have developed a fine, pocket-sized manual for immediate referral.
Audience: Clinical practitioners working in a sports medicine setting are the intended audience.
Features: The book uses an easy-to-read format to cover history, onset, signs and symptoms, management, pharmacology, pathophysiology, key learning points, and references for each condition. Well thought out and easy to read charts, figures, and flowcharts reinforce the material. The book primarily references rugby when specific sport references are warranted. A more diverse array of sports could be used as examples. The book also contains dated material on concussions.
Assessment: This is a well-written, comprehensive book for sports medicine practitioners that details a variety of emergency issues and their management. It appears to be a useful pocket reference that would come in handy on the sidelines.
