Description: This is the 11th edition of a solid, comprehensive guide to best practices for today's EMTs. This edition includes updates to the 2015 cardiopulmonary resuscitation and emergency cardiac care guidelines and is based on the National EMS Education Standards. The online resources include an ebook version with the additional option of audio lectures and flashcard style quizzes.
Purpose: This update of the 2013 edition incorporates current standards but avoids controversial topics such as c-spine immobilization and backboards.
Audience: The audience includes those studying to be EMTs as well as already practicing EMTs. Nearly 250 EMS experts, including currently practicing EMTs, paramedics, EMS professors, and many others, contributed to this book.
Features: The book highlights the current medical science in line with national organization guidelines. Section topics include everything from basic emergency medical systems and operations to the treatment of special populations. An entire section is dedicated to the all-important patient assessment. To address impending changes, a section addresses the future of EMS and emerging team healthcare concepts. The "you are the provider" breakouts in each chapter help integrate the concepts and demand critical thinking about what actions to take in each scenario. Interspersed throughout the book are helpful mnemonics for important concepts and safety tips. In addition, the "words of wisdom" call attention to a wide range of key topics, including medical issues and career assessments for students. Every chapter concludes with an assessment, which provides a comprehensive review of the chapter.
