Editorial Reviews

From The Critics
Reviewer: Thomas A. Morse, MD (University of Chicago Pritzker School of Medicine)
Description: This book uses a question-and-answer format to address the most commonly encountered problems in emergency medicine.
Purpose: This book is the newest in the "Secrets Series" in which the Socratic method is used to emphasize and provide the essentials for the evaluation and management of patients seen in the emergency department. In my opinionthese objectives are met.
Audience: The desired audience for this book is emergency medicine residents, interns, and medical students. The book is designed to provide information and guidance in this setting, and it is not meant to be an all-inclusive reference. I believe this is a good book for medical students during their rotation in the emergency department and for residents early in training. Senior residents will probably find this book too basic, but it still provides a good brief overview for those that level. Even though a few of t he contributors are senior residents, the vast majority hold faculty positions.
Features: There are only two black-and-white figures, but there are numerous charts, tables, and algorithms that provide quick easy-to-access information. The chapters include current and adequate references. The table of contents and index are extremely well organized and easy to follow.
Assessment: The book has an attractive appearance and is the appropriate size for its intended use. The unique question-and-answer format provides a refreshing and very useful reference for the medical student, intern, or beginning emergency medicine resident. For the more advanced resident, it provides a good overview for the management of patients in the emergency department.
