Children's Literature
Kids are fascinated by people who wear uniforms to work, and this book provides a surfeit of examples, from the typical policemen and firemen to less commonly considered contributors to rescue work, such as the folks from FEMA (the Federal Emergency Management Agency). The photographs include both men and women, with a variety of ethnicities represented. Each type of emergency or community worker is profiled in simple text and illustrated by sharp photographs, none of which will disturb the squeamish. Emergencies other than the most typical are represented, including a description of wildlife rescues such as freeing trapped whales from fishing nets. Kids probably do not think of utility workers as emergency workers, but the important role of restoring power is also covered. The text includes examples of how regular citizens can help out and how to insure your own home and family are prepared. A short glossary and an index appear at the back. 2005, Crabtree, Ages 4 to 8.
