Doody's Review ServiceReviewer: Ronald Sims, MD (Dubuque Internal Medicine)
Description: This multimedia product consists of a videotape and short book for students of electromyography. It is intended as a companion to a textbook.
Purpose: The video provides a framework in which to recognize normal and abnormal waveforms seen on needle electromyograms. This presentation greatly enhances the learning experience possible from the textbook. Additionally, hundreds of hours of laboratory experience is condensed into 57 minutes.
Audience: This product is intended for trainees and practitioners of electromyography. It would be highly useful as a means of acquainting large groups with the test. The authors are on the neurology faculty at University Hospitals of Cleveland.
Features: The video is an excellent tool for learning EMG waveforms. Succinct discussions of each sample are provided in the accompanying text. Watching the video and reading the corresponding portion of the text section by section affords an in-depth, comprehensive review of the subject. Normal and abnormal spontaneous activity, evaluation of voluntary motor unit potentials, and patterns of abnormal motor unit potentials are included. This product is easy to use and understand, of high visual and auditory quality, and overall very enjoyable. The video adds tremendously to the value of the companion textbook. There are no significant shortcomings. Similar videos on localizing muscles for EMG exams and nerve conduction studies would be useful. This video product is much less costly in terms of money and time than others on this topic.
Assessment: This product is of superb value for learning electromyography. Whoever invests a bit of money and a few hours with this product will be well rewarded.
