    I Also Recommend:

Absorbing! Enlightening! Share this powerful book with a friend.

I couldn't put this book down. The writer pulled me into the deep emotional journey of this injured child. The character's innocence made the story believable and heartwrenching. This emotional hurt could only be written by someone who experienced a deep emotional trauma.

I would recommend this book for at risk children and troubled teens as well as troubled adults who need to heal from abuse and trauma.

When we can separate ourselves from our parents' darkness, the answer to "Who am I?" can be liberating.

I really appreciated how this book is more than just another recounting of a miserable childhood, but rather, an affirmation of our potential as individuals and the possibility of finding confidence and self-esteem outside of the home. I strongly recommend it for young people who find themselves in a home where they feel unappreciated or unloved. But even older women can benefit by recalling memories of persons who showed a real personal interest in them, be they teachers, counselors or relatives.

The toughest book I ever loved

From the first chapter Janie had me, this was one of the hardest books I ever read and one of the hardest books to put down. I think this is a great book for pre or early teens but I believe it should also be read by every adult. For me it brought back a lot of memories of a rough childhood that I survived and it was wonderful to see how Emily survived hers. I think that if a child is going through a tough time in their lives it helps to read about other children going through some of the same things and coming through it a better person for it. I found it to be therapeutic and comforting.

A great help in a small package!

"Emily" is a very powerful story of how a young girl learns to be herself and to be happy despite living with a dysfunctional family. Many adolescents will be able to identify with her. Reading "Emily" can help them to find themselves and to be content regardless of their circumstances.

    Emily by Janie Lancaster

As a young boy in school I never considered the thought that the girl across the aisle may have an entry in her diary about me. Furthermore, had I been informed of such an entry I would have been embarrassed.
After I read Janie Lancaster's book about Emily, I realized how important a diary entry can be.
For all I know, there may have been an Emily or two in my class, but I
would have been oblivious to them. Boys don't analyze every event, every
action, every feeling or emotion, and they surely never put them on paper, even when asked to.
Emily was one of those inexplicably resilient children who could accomplish many things despite an especially grim childhood. I t was obvious she needed a confidant, someone she could trust, someone she could share her fears, her likes, her dislikes.
Emily had many doors to open and she needed a true friend to help her open them. She found that friend and thus was able to cope with the pressures of life.
Emily can be an inspiration to all young girls who face similar problems and emotions.
