Meet the Author

Peggy Post, Emily Post's great-granddaughter-in-law, is a director of The Emily Post Institute and the author of more than a dozen books. Peggy writes a monthly column in Good Housekeeping and an online wedding etiquette column for the New York Times.

Read an Excerpt

Introduction

If you're like most newly engaged couples, nothing quite equals the rapturous thrill of having decided to tie the knot -- the excitement of being on the verge of taking one of the most important steps of your lives. But behind the congratulations, rejoicing, and jitters hovers the stark reality of planning the big event. How can you get everything taken care of without detracting from the joy and anticipation so unique to a wedding? Having spoken at wedding planning seminars and answered scores of wedding questions in my monthly column in Good Housekeeping magazine, I'm well acquainted with the dilemmas that face today's brides and grooms. I'm happy to present Emily Post's Wedding Planner, your tool for making the whole process not only manageable but enjoyable.  Before I tell you what the book has in store, you should know that planning your wedding doesn't have to be intimidating. You can bring order to the process by thinking in three broad categories.
  1. Setting Your Priorities. Do you want a big, formal wedding or do you lean toward a smaller gathering of family and close friends? Do you want to go the traditional route or put your own personal stamp on the ceremony?
  2. Tracking The Details. What do you look for when hiring a photographer? When do you time the receiving line-or do you even have one? Do you have any responsibilities for accommodating out-of-town guests?
  3. Smoothing The Way. "Etiquette" means using tact, consideration, and common sense so that you and everyone else, from your attendants and parents to your wedding contractors and guests, feel more comfortable. How do you politely test thequality of a caterer or a band? How can you help your attendants to keep their own expenses down?

Emily Post's Wedding Planner leads you through the entire process, step by step, detail by detail. The planner also serves as an efficient hands-on organizer, with space for jotting down notes on cost estimates, meetings, gift lists, registry information, and even memorable personal anecdotes. Not only will you be able to keep track of your expenses with the planner, but you'll be able to file away receipts, invoices, and memorabilia in handy organizer pockets, which also provide the perfect place to store such items as menu samples from caterers, business cards, proposals from contractors, and mementos from bridal showers and parties. You'll also find time lines, worksheets, and address books -- everything you need, conveniently located in one place and under one cover.

The book is designed to answer the questions you already have and raise any that haven't occurred to you. Believe it or not, there's an answer for every wedding question! It's my wish that this trusty planner win help make your wedding as special as you always dreamed it would be. May you relax, get organized, and enjoy!

    Like 'FINE WINE' Books

The best things in life are often imitated, but hardly duplicated. Such is the case for two of the finest and most helpful wedding books I've read: 'Emily Post's Wedding Planner' by Peggy Post, and 'With These Words...I Thee Wed' by Barbara Eklof. Both books set the standard for today's perfect wedding. Post brings the same superb and tried & truest approach to weddings that she has to all etiquette arenas. And I've been a fan and gift-giver of Eklof's 'With These Words' ever since it's beautiful debut excerpts were published in 'Brides Magazine'--imagine, the 1st of all wedding vow books. So if you have high standards for your wedding day, don't settle for second best. Stick with the pros and expect excellence.
