The second volume in the Magician Trilogy takes up the story two years after the Welsh boy Gwyn discovers his magical powers. Now the focus shifts to Nia, Gwyn's former neighbor. When her family moves from their farm to the nearby town, Nia feels uprooted and lost in the shuffle. As the story develops, an old mystery grows in importance and the otherworldly element from The Snow Spider (2006) becomes a threatening presence once again. First published in England in 1986, the book's manageable length, sympathetic characters, and appealing jacket art will lure readers. . –Carolyn Phelan
Publishers Weekly
In the follow-up to The Snow Spider (in a starred review, PW said, "Swiftly paced and cleverly plotted, this novel fluidly fuses fantasy, suspense and drama"), Emlyn's Moon by Jenny Nimmo, this second book in the Magician Trilogy follows Gwyn and his friend Nia as they become involved with a boy who insists that his mother lives in the moon. Of course Arianwen, the Snow Spider, has a role to play. (Scholastic/ Orchard, $9.99 176p ages 9-12 ISBN 978-0-439-84676-9; Jan.) Copyright 2007 Reed Business Information.
Children's Literature - Paula McMillen
Nia Lloyd is the middle child of the seven Lloyd children. Burdened with the nicknames "Nia in the Middle" and "Nia Can't Do Nothing" by her younger twin brothers, she has come to believe in the truth of their taunts, feeling that all her siblings have talents and that she has none. Nia is distressed by her father's decision to move the family from their ancestral home on the mountain, Ty Llyr, to the nearby market town of Pendewi so that he can take over the local butcher's shop. Her fascination with the beautifully painted chapel on the edge of town that is now home to schoolmate Emlyn Llewellyn, leads her to disregard parental warnings and into one mysterious discovery after another. Nia quickly becomes embroiled in a desperate effort to reunite Emlyn with his missing mother and baby brother. She eventually allies herself with Emlyn's cousin and nascent magician Gwyn Griffiths and very nearly perishes in the battle between ancient Welsh forces of magic. Not only does she survive, but the birth of a new sibling rescues her from her the middle of the family, and Nia triumphs in the dreaded school competition when her fabric collage depicting her beloved home wins the prize, making it clear to all that "Nia Can Do Anything." Action, magic, and well-drawn male and female characters will entice young readers of both genders with a taste for fantasy. Rich with visual and moody imagery, Nimmo's second installment of "The Magician Trilogy" provides frequent references to Welsh mythology, offering an attractive alternative to stories based on the more familiar English, European, and Scandinavian tales.
