Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature - Enid Portnoy
This biography of Emma Stone is part of the “Sizzling Celebrities” series, which headlines successful, young entertainers. Born in Arizona, Emma always loved comedies, especially in movies. She watched them over and over with her father who also loved movies. She started out as a gymnast but suffered a few sports accidents, which probably lead to two years of serious panic attacks. Her panic attacks grew so bad that she was afraid to be out in public, and clung to her mother. Acting began as an activity just to overcome her shyness. Slowly she began to enjoy pretending to be someone else. At eleven, Stone auditioned for her first play and won the part of the otter in “The Wind in the Willows” because of her loud voice. She decided she wanted to be homeschooled so she could spend spent more time in local community theatre. In 2012 she was nominated in two categories for an MTV Trailblazer award after appearing in the movie “Crazy, Stupid, Love.” It was a new award for young actors who appeared in a variety of roles. She worked long and hard to feel at home on stage. Chapter titles tell her story well: “The Trailblazer,” “She lived for Performing,” “Cookies for Dogs,” “Supergood!” and last, “The Most Unbelievable Thing.” Actors, authors and musicians she respected are her inspirations. Emma’s childhood dream of being in movies was beginning to be realized. Youthful aspiring actors and actresses who read her story will be impressed by her perseverance. As she made professional contacts, a new world of acting opened for her. Schuman describes roles she took and links them with colored photographs of the glamorous people with whom she worked. Her success story may help teach others how to realize their dreams. Reviewer: Enid Portnoy; Ages 11 to 15.
