Everybody loves vacations, but not everybody loves the same things. When Emma's mom and dad make all the plans-a car drive, a bus ride, trips on boats and trains-sight-seeing is exhausting! So adorable Emma shows them how to have a really good time, with a lot less fuss.

Emma's idea of a good vacation is quite different from that of her parents.

Editorial Reviews

Publishers Weekly - Publisher's Weekly
A welcome return for the cuddly and lovable bear-heroine of Fix-It and Emma's Pet. Emma and her parents have set off on vacation, but they get lost; they arrive at their cabin after dark; it's raining; and, the roof leaks. When the next morning dawns clear, a frantic adult quest for fun begins. They go up a mountain, out to lunch, ride a boat, a bus, a train and a rocket ship. Whew! The next day Emma introduces her idea of a vacation: wading in a brook, catching a fish, picking berries, climbing a tree and other activities. McPhail's soft-edged watercolors lend a reassuring tone to a story that rings true; he contrasts the glitz of amusement parks with the loving hugs of family togetherness. Wondering what type of vacation to take? Choose Emma's! Ages 2-5. (April)
School Library Journal
PreS-Gr 2 As with other stories about Emma, the little bear ( Fix-It 1984 and Emma's Pet 1985, both Dutton), McPhail provides a simple, enjoyable solution to a hectic or otherwise troublesome situation. This time, Emma is on vacation with her parents. But while her parents need to fill their days sightseeing rather than interacting with each other, Emma would rather spend her vacation going on a picnic, taking walks, singing songs, and telling stories. In the end, Emma wins out, and her parents learn what relaxing and a family vacation are all about. The soft watercolor illustrations give a peaceful feeling to this short, humorous story. This story would be a welcome addition to preschool storyhours, and the text is easy and short enough for beginning readers. McPhail's warm illustrations and clever story will hold the attention of youngsters who know what it is like to have to always do what adults want to do.
