Editorial Reviews

Library Journal
Writing for business and human resource managers, 13 experts in their subspecialties have created an easy-to-read, up-to-date guide to employment law, topically arranged in 12 chapters. Some of the major concerns discussed are affirmative action, the Family and Medical Leave Act of 1993, the Americans with Disabilities Act, wages and salaries, Occupational Safety and Health Administration regulations, benefits, drugs in the workplace, immigration and visas, problem employees, personnel policy manuals, personnel audits, and workers' compensation. Each chapter begins with an introduction; chapter subtitles are boldfaced and included in the table of contents, allowing for easy access. Legal citations are provided as footnotes, but because the text was prepared by lawyers, business managers may not be familiar with the abbreviations used to refer to law books. Similar to Steven Mitchell Sack's The Hiring and Firing Book ( LJ 9/15/93), this handbook covers many issues in greater depth but lacks the ``counsel comments'' and ready-to-use, sample checklists, contracts, releases, and forms that Sack's work furnishes. Differences in local law are not addressed in either source. Ultimately, both references have merit, complementing rather than replacing each other. A useful addition to business collections.-- Marilyn Rosenthal, Nassau Community Coll. Lib., Garden City, N.Y.
